HP OfficeJet Pro 8132e All-in-One Printer

Purchased new 8132e printer.

Install worked without hitch and printing without issue. However, I have identified 2 issues - both relating to Power Management:

1. Inactivity shutdown: This feature is supposed to automatically shutdown the printer if the time applied in the setting is reached. I set mine up for 20 minutes and after 20 mins + of NO activity, the printer does not shutdown… The other available time settings in the dropdown also do not work.

2. Auto schedule On/Off does not work: I applied the settings On=8am and Off=8pm, and set it to be across all week days.

The printer started up at 8am as expected but on checking the settings I noticed that it had also then turned off the schedule on setting. I re-enabled and had to reenter the settings, only for the printer to completely lock up with Event Code C4.9E.0D.0B

Unable to power off with button but after having pressed it, if you wait around 5/10 mins the printer restarts. You can then go in and reapply setting.
Unfortunately, the same issue then repeats etc… The Schedule Off settings applied do not seem to disappear, only schedule on.

I am running the very latest firmware and have also  reset the user settings and factory resets.

Spoke to HP support but most of the WhatsApp live chat was spent trying to prove to them that the settings even existed on the 8132e, despite me sending photos of the printer control panel  and screen shot from HP Smart. They didn’t seem to have any real Technical IT skills and eventually concluded that I’d go back to shop and get replacement.

It’s likely that this fault is a firmware issue, so hoping HP properly investigate and send out firmware update. I expect my replacement 8132e will have same issue…. Interested to know from other users and HP Technician.

Did you register for Instant Ink or the HP+ features?

If so, the printer needs to be online so it can phone home

These settings are all described about page 110, of the user manual.  One would think tech support would know something about scheduling.

Inactivity Shutdown is disabled when a printer wireless or Wi-Fi Direct capability is turned on or when a printer with fax, USB, or Ethernet network capability establishes a fax, USB, or Ethernet network connection.

The power management has no warning like the above for scheduling power on/off.  Either a hardware problem or it is ignored if you signed up for HP+ or Instant Ink.

I assume the printer is working OK otherwise.  let me know if a problem.

I have not registered for HP+ or Instant Ink. However, my understanding is that these features should still be working regardless of this.

Update:

I have installed replacement 8132e printer but set firmware updates to ‘notify’ so that it did not automatically update.

The firmware ‘out the box’ has firmware 6.20.1.5 and the inactivity shutdown options are 1 hr, 2hr, 4hr or 8 hr.

The very latest firmware, which was on my faulty 8132e printer was 6.23.2.13 and had a DIFFERENT set of auto shutdown options of 20mins, 1hr, 2hr or 8hrs.

So it does confirm that the latest firmware does include alterations to the very setting I have been seeing issues with!

Currently testing the inactivity shutdown setting of 1hr on  my replacement Printer (running old firmware 6.20.1.5) to see if it works. If it does, that further points to a firmware issue with the latest version.

Anyone technical from HP read this forum??

This is a user to user forum.  I have some HP systems and do some gridcoin mining as part of BOINC research.  This forum is a hobby for me.

Unless the documentation is wrong, enabling Wi-Fi means that "inactivity shutdown" can be overridden..

I do not have an instant ink printer. My understanding is that if you run out of ink, or you cancel your subscription, you can use genuine Hewlett Packard cartridges either original or refilled. They must have an HP chip in the cartridge.

Some HP printers can use non-HP ink

if you can currently use non-HP ink then disable firmware updates.

Hi Beemer… appreciate your responses…

As you say, the Inactivity Shutdown setting may be disabled if the printer is on a network… I will test and see.

Re the schedule on and off, I see no reason why this didnt work. I will test my replacement printer and see what I get 🙂

Im not HP+ or Instant Ink… I’m not keen of being tied in by HP re the HP+, which I believe you can’t leave once you have signed up and as for the ink, based on my personal usage I don’t think it will be a cost effective solution for me.

Ive disabled the auto firmware updates regardless of the above and set to ‘notify’ for the time being.

Will post back to this topic once I’ve concluded further tests.

Appreciate your responses Beemer 🙂
