HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Is there a firmware rollback available for my HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 that will allow me to use 3rd party ink cartridges.  Like everyone else, my printer was working fine until I had to replace the cartridge.  I was using the same non HP cartridge and now I get the message it is blocking the cartridge.  I have spent hours trying to figure out how to work around it. Very frustrated.

Hi @Voyager41,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

  • Unfortunately, there is no option to downgrade the firmware once the latest version is installed.
  • This firmware update does not affect the printer usage if you are using a HP ink cartridge as the printer reads the chips on the HP ink cartridges.
  • For more information about cartridge yields and ink use, click here

Keep me posted for further assistance.

same issue here with our 7740s; 3rd party cartridges worked just fine until this firmware upgrade; wondering whether this could be a potential anti-trust conflict; any lawyers out there interested to chime in?

Sort of a catch 22 for HP. Technically, non HP chips could have embedded malware that could cause hackers to be able to access your systems and data, but doing so also blocks said cartridges. The question, who gets blamed if your data is compromised because of the printer?
