I have a 2 week old HP Color Laser Jet Pro M255dw . . . finally got it configured just the way I wanted; all good, printing just fine. Then, I thought I'd check to see I had the latest Firmware and downloaded the Firmware Update Tool. I (stupidly) decided to go ahead and run the tool without first checking to see if I needed an update . . . the firmware update process failed; the printer is stuck in a repetitive calibration loop and displays: 79 Service Error Turn Off then Turn On . . . tried the recommended disconnection of network cable but no soap. The printer will not stay in a Ready State and will not print.
I believe I see another post about a RESET process. Please advise! Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hi @mlmittelman,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A "79 Service Error" on an HP printer typically indicates a firmware error or a problem with the printer's software. When this error occurs, the printer will enter a feedback loop, where it repeatedly displays the error message and asks you to turn off the printer and then turn it back on.
Here are some steps you can take to try to resolve the issue.
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for 30 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
- If the error persists, try resetting the printer's firmware by performing a cold reset. To do this, turn off the printer, then press and hold the "Wireless" and "Cancel" buttons together while turning the printer back on. Hold the buttons until the printer's control panel lights start flashing, then release the buttons.
- If the cold reset does not resolve the issue, try updating the printer's firmware to the latest version. You can download the firmware update from the HP website, then install it using the printer's control panel or HP Smart app.
Note: Before performing any of these steps, make sure that the printer is not displaying any other error messages or warnings that may require different solutions.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4:
Thank you for your response . . . as there was some urgency to my original post, so I kept searching at the time, until I found this:
I did an NVRAM reset, following above instructions in the link provided in his solution summary:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/Admin-Password-Reset/td-p/5649013
I am curious, though, in your recommendation you mention "Wireless" and "Cancel" buttons . . . where might those be located on this printer? (HP Color Laser Jet M255dw).
Thanks again for responding. Much appreciated.
