HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dw

Mac will not load the firmware updater:

Apple could not verify “HP Firmware Updater” is free of malware that may harm your Mac or compromise your privacy.

Any workarounds?

Hi @OaklandDon,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Download the Firmware Update

  1. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads:
  2. Identify Your Printer:
    • Enter "HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dw" and click Submit.
  3. Select macOS:
    • Ensure macOS is the selected operating system.
  4. Download the Firmware Update:
    • Under the Firmware section, click Download to save the firmware file to your Mac.

Allow the HP Firmware Updater to Run on macOS

If macOS blocks the HP Firmware Updater due to verification issues, follow these steps to bypass the security and allow the updater to run:

  1. Open Security & Privacy Preferences:
    • Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
  2. Allow the Application to Run:
    • In the General tab, you might see a message stating that the HP Firmware Updater was blocked. Click Open Anyway.
  3. Confirm and Allow:
    • A prompt will appear asking if you are sure you want to open the application. Click Open to confirm.

Disable Gatekeeper Temporarily (if needed)

Gatekeeper is the mechanism macOS uses to enforce code signing and verification. Temporarily disabling it can allow you to run the HP Firmware Updater:

  1. Open Terminal:
    • Navigate to Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
  2. Disable Gatekeeper Temporarily:
    • Enter the command: sudo spctl --master-disable. You may need to enter your admin password.
  3. Run the HP Firmware Updater:
    • Open the HP Firmware Updater you downloaded.
  4. Re-enable Gatekeeper:
    • After the firmware update is complete, re-enable Gatekeeper by entering: sudo spctl --master-enable.

Running the HP Firmware Updater

  1. Locate the Firmware File:
    • Open the downloaded .dmg file and double-click HP Firmware Updater.
  2. Follow the On-screen Instructions:
    • Select your printer from the list and follow the prompts to update the firmware.

Verify the Firmware Update

  1. Restart Your Printer:
    • Ensure the printer is turned on and connected to your network or Mac.
  2. Check the Firmware Version:
    • Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by typing the printer’s IP address into a web browser and verify the firmware version under the System tab.
      I hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips.  I eventually did manage to get the firmware installed after following a somewhat similar course, but that still didn't work; apparently the new firmware did not generate a new certificate.  What worked was going from the error message, proceeding not just to "details" (which looked like it would help) but "website," which ultimately got me to an HP page formatted as if it came from ca. 1998, but that allowed be to manually enter a new certificate.  Good only for a year, so I guess I will be doing this again next year, but the solution should take 4 minutes rather than the 4 hours it took me to try and retry every possible solution I could find online.
