Hello,
I have an HP Pagewide Pro 477dw MFP printer, which I purchased 4 years ago and which works fine. I use it together with an iMac running on OS Big Sur.
I now wanted to print from Word (like I have done thousands of times before), but it shows only small little rectangles instead of letters. I have checked out various fonts, but the issue persists. The printer software is up to date. I have restarted the printer a few times. I printed out the list of fonts, and it has the fonts that are I used listed as installed fonts. Printing of PDF documents works just fine.
Does anyone have ideas? Many thanks in advance!!

I am having the same issue, same printer as you. There are other threads with same problem. The one with the most detail for solutions is: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/My-print-comes-out-as-grey-squares-inst...
Titled: My print comes out as grey squares instead of letters after the MacOs Big Sur 11.5.1

I found a workaround:
Some of the fonts do not print, including Calibri and Cambria.
But some still do print! Gill Sans and Times New Roman for a start.
*** The workaround is to change the fonts to fonts that do still print properly on your printer. ***
We have to hope that this is just a temporary problem and that either Apple or HP will fix it (without just finger pointing at each other).
I am running macOS Big Sur 11.5 on an iMac Pro (2017).

By the way, has anyone tried making a small Word document and mailing it to a friendly Windows user?
It would be good to know if this only affects local printing from our Macs, or whether the problems are deeper.
