Hi @PrintOnce,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If you've forgotten the password for your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw, you can reset the printer to factory default settings to clear the password and restore default settings.

Here’s how to do it:

Factory Reset HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw (to clear password)

Method 1: Reset via the Printer Control Panel

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the back arrow (←) button on the printer's control panel.
  3. While holding the back arrow, power the printer back on.
  4. Keep holding the back arrow until the Ready, Attention, and Toner lights all turn on (may take 10–20 seconds).
  5. Release the button. This will open the Service Menu.
  6. Navigate to:
Restore Defaults > press OK or Enter.

This will reset network settings, admin password, and other custom configurations.

After Reset: Reconnect the Printer

  • You’ll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi or reconfigure the network after the reset.
  • Use the HP Smart app or visit the printer’s embedded web server (EWS) at its new IP address.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

This doesn't appear to work.  But maybe I did not do it correctly.  Where is the "toner" light?

When I released the buttons, the printer re-initialized itself and nothing seems to have changed. Service menu did not open.

Hi @PrintOnce,

Thank you for letting me know. I would suggest that you please try a Hard reset first and then try the above steps to help solve the issue. Do try and keep me posted.

Please remove the Cartridges from the Printer if possible, and try a Hard Reset. Do keep us posted to help you better

** Hard reset :
1. Turn the printer on if it is not already on.
2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
8. Turn on the printer if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

HP Smart App: Please uninstall the HP Smart app --> restart the Device, Wi-Fi router and printer, --> install it back and add the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

@VikramTheGreat

No change. Still initializes upon button release.  Still requires password.

Is there actually a toner light on this printer?  Toner msgs usually show up on control panel LCD.

I have not used HP Smart App. Tried installing but it did nothing for me.
