Hi @wanab000,

Thank you for the response.

Yes, you did the right thing by downloading the firmware update, but that blue bar stuck at maximum for 15 minutes is kind of sus. If that happens again:

Next time, wait at least 30 minutes, just in case it’s applying updates silently in the background. If nothing changes:

Restart the printer and your PC.

Try reinstalling the firmware using HP’s Firmware Update Utility (FUT) instead of through the Smart Install tool.

About Unused Toner Cartridges

You’re asking all the right questions, love. Here’s the real scoop:

Toner (like your HP 134X) does not expire the way ink does.

As long as it's stored properly (cool, dry place, no extreme heat or humidity), it’ll be perfectly fine even after a year or more!

HP says unopened cartridges can last at least 18–24 months (even longer in ideal conditions).

So go ahead and keep the extra 134X, you'll save yourself $91 next year.

Bonus Tip (Just in Case You're Curious)

If you're not going to use the printer often:

Print a test page every couple of weeks to keep the rollers and laser components active.

Store the spare cartridge box-side up (not laying flat) if you want to be extra safe.

I hope this helps.

Product Name:HP LaserJet MFP M235dw
Type:01.01.02.00.01

I know the pages printed is

Total Impressions:784
Duplex Sheets:253

I had the HP 134x in it . supposed to be 2400 pages.  Printer wasn't used for a couple months,,toner doesn't dry up does it? I put back in the cartridge that came with it 134A  It works but low toner. Hate to spend another $91 for an HP cartridge. Any luck with generic brands?

Hi @wanab000,

Thanks for writing in! Let’s get everything sorted out for you.

Regarding Error Code 11 on your HP LaserJet MFP M235dw:

HP has recently released a firmware update that specifically addresses Error Code 11 and improves overall printer performance.

Here's how to fix it: Make sure your printer is turned on and connected to your computer via USB or the same Wi-Fi network.

Visit the official HP Software & Driver Downloads page.

Enter your printer model: HP LaserJet MFP M235dw.

Download and install the latest firmware update available for your device.

Follow the on-screen instructions and restart your printer after installation.

That should resolve the error! If you need help during the process, I’m just a message away

Now, about the toner cartridge and print yield:

You mentioned switching from the HP 134X to the starter HP 134A and wondering about toner drying up, good question!

Toner does not dry out like ink, since it’s a powder, not a liquid.

However, if the printer sits unused for long periods, dust or humidity might cause some clumping or settling, which could affect print quality slightly.

Also, HP 134X is rated for up to 2,400 pages, but the actual yield depends on what you're printing (heavy graphics use more toner). You've printed 784 pages, which is well within the expected range.

About using generic toner cartridges:

We totally understand wanting to save money, those OEM cartridges aren’t cheap! But just a gentle reminder:

HP does not recommend or support third-party/generic toner cartridges as they may:

Cause print quality issues.

Trigger error messages.

Void certain warranty protections.

I hope this helps.

This is the only one I found for my 235    HP LaserJet Ultra MFP M230 series   I downloaded it and the progress blue bar has been at maximum for 15 min    Should I just restart now?

HP Recommended

Well I should have waited. Are you sure that the toner in a new unopened cartridge box will be OK to use after awhile? Because I just received a new cartridgge from HP. It works fine now even with that older 134X cartridge. So now I have plenty.Don't know if I should return the new unopened 134X or keep it. IF IT will still be good after a year....takes me that long to use up 2000 sheets. Thanks for your help ......You are the go to person for help..😃
