Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I bought a Laser Jet Pro MFP M127fn 10 years ago, new.  At that time, I couldn't get the driver/installation to install.  Since I had access to another printer, I didn't worry about it.  Now, this is the only printer I have and still can't get the driver install to download.  It gives me a message that the install took too long to download.  Any suggestions?

Hi @PL66,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

If your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fn is giving you trouble with the driver installation on Windows 10, especially showing the "install took too long to download" message, this could be due to outdated drivers, connection issues, or firewall restrictions. Since this model is older, it may require specific steps to work with newer operating systems.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve the issue and get your printer working:

Download Driver Manually from HP Website: Instead of relying on automatic downloads, manually download the driver from HP’s official support page:

  • Go to HP's Support page and search for HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fn.
  • Choose Windows 10 as your operating system and download the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fn Full Software and Driver package.
  • Once downloaded, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Install Drivers in Compatibility Mode:

  • Right-click the downloaded driver installer file and choose Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab.
  • Check the box that says Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows 8 or Windows 7 from the drop-down menu.
  • Click Apply, then run the installer.

Disable Firewall/Antivirus Temporarily: Sometimes, firewalls or antivirus software can block the driver installation process.

  • Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall during the installation.
  • After the installation is successful, you can turn it back on.

Check USB Connection (if connected via USB):

  • Ensure that your printer is directly connected to the computer via a functional USB cable, not through a USB hub.
  • Try switching to a different USB port on your computer.
  • Once connected, Windows might automatically recognize and install a basic driver for the printer.

Run Windows Troubleshooter:

  • Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  • Select Printer from the list and run the troubleshooter to detect and fix any issues automatically.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @PL66 ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from HP’s official site.
  • This tool can diagnose and fix various issues with HP printers, including driver installation problems.

Install via Windows Update (Basic Driver): If the full driver package continues to fail, you can try installing a basic driver via Windows Update:

  • Connect your printer to the computer using a USB cable or via network (if applicable).
  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Click Add a printer or scanner.
  • If Windows doesn’t automatically detect the printer, click The printer that I want isn’t listed, then follow the prompts to install a basic driver through Windows Update.

Check for Pending Windows Updates:

  • Ensure that your Windows 10 system is fully updated by going to Settings > Update & Security > Check for updates.
  • Install any pending updates and restart your computer, as some printer drivers are bundled with Windows updates.

Use HP Universal Print Driver (UPD):

  • If the specific driver still fails, you can use the HP Universal Print Driver as an alternative.
  • Go to HP’s Universal Print Driver page and download the latest version for Windows 10.
  • Install the driver and choose PCL6 or PostScript as the mode during installation.

Try a Different Computer/Network (if applicable): If the installation continues to fail, you can try installing the printer on a different computer or network to rule out issues with the computer or internet connection.

Using a Windows 10 Basic Printer Driver: Go to Devices and Printers, select Add a Printer, and select HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fn from the list of basic drivers.

If after trying these steps, the installation still fails, there could be a deeper issue with the printer’s firmware or a problem with the installation process itself. You can try:

Contact HP Phone Support for further assistance with your specific issue.
