I was able to add my printer to the new PC, but it won't find it when I go to print something. Tried a few things and it tells me the driver is unavailable and also got that the PC doesn't support the printer??? Any help with this or do I need a new printer?

@JoannBrac, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Check the Printer Connection
USB connection: If you're using a USB cable, make sure the cable is securely plugged into both the printer and the PC. Try a different USB port or a different cable if possible.
Wi-Fi connection: If you’re using Wi-Fi, ensure that both the printer and the PC are on the same network.
Update/Reinstall Printer Drivers
Visit HP’s Support Page: Go to HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support and download the latest driver for your version of Windows. Even if Windows tried to install a driver automatically, it might not have installed the correct one.
Uninstall Old Drivers: Sometimes, old or conflicting drivers can cause issues. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers and right-click on the printer, selecting Remove device. Then, reinstall the driver you downloaded from HP’s website.
After reinstalling the driver, restart your PC and printer.
Set the Printer as Default
Sometimes the printer might be added but not set as the default one. Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners and make sure the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is listed and set as the default printer.
Use the HP Smart App
HP offers the HP Smart app (available on the Microsoft Store), which can help you troubleshoot and manage your printer. It’s often better at detecting printers than the built-in Windows utilities.
Download it and let it search for your printer. It may give you additional options to connect or configure the printer.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix common printing issues.
Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)
- Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.
