Paid hundreds of dollars for HP instant ink program, and never received a cartridge. So when they automatically INCREASED my monthly subscription, we canceled. Now we can't print at all on the printer that we PURCHASED. THis business practice is disingenuous and short-sighted. Do NOT fall for their scammy offers. Expensive lesson for buying a printer, paying them for years additional funds, and now just using it as a doorstop.

Apologies for jumping in unannounced.
Your printer is not hostage though I can see why you might think so.
The printer is usable outside of the optional subscription to Instant Ink.
It is true that you cannot use any of the Instant Ink / subscription cartridges without the service.
What?
All Instant Ink cartridges -- including those cartridges activated by the service and any subsequent subscription cartridges sent as part of the subscription -- remain the property of HP.
Subscription cartridges only work with an active subscription.
At the termination of the service, subscription cartridges will lock after the final billing cycle.
Details are explained in the contract and other supporting documents and videos.

Hello frjoles,
If you log into your account page (instantink.com) under My INK on the HOME page if it says Shipped next to the color ink that means you have a shipment on the way and can click the word shipped to get tracking information or if it says Delivered that means you have a set of color ink on hand that you have not used yet. You should look around the house and ask other family members if they put it somewhere. It could be in a small brown box with a black HP logo or a small blue and white box.
If it says "Instant Ink Cartridge installed" then the system does not detect that you need ink yet. If you are getting printer messages that you are running low on ink then you should already have a set of Instant Ink cartridges on hand. If you can not locate them you can call support for help.
