Hi there, new to group. So im trying to print onto vinyl number plate media but the HP 1102 custom paper limits fall under the 520mm length I need...  I know it's possible though, seen machines using same software I use and printing on HP 1102. I'm not massively technical, not sure if there's a custom driver available or something? Any help form you guys in the group would be "MASSIVELY" appreciated.

Thanks

Carl

Hi @CARL-1981,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

You're absolutely right. While the HP P1102 typically limits custom paper to 216 × 356 mm (8.5 × 14“) (Letter/Legal max), it can print longer sheets if the firmware and driver allow it, and you've even seen it done with the same model. Here’s how to unlock that and print your vinyl number-plate media (~520+ mm long):

Step 1: Use a PCL6 or PostScript Driver

The default host-based driver enforces strict limits. Switch to HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) – PCL6 or PostScript for more flexibility.

Step 2: Create a Custom Paper Size in Windows

  1. Go to Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
  2. Select your P1102, click Manage → Printing preferences.
  3. Under Paper/Quality, click Custom.
  4. Define your length (e.g., Width: 210 mm, Height: 520 mm).
  5. Save as a new form name (like "Vinyl-dplte").

Alternatively, use Print Server Properties:

  • Open [Printers & scanners], then click Print server properties.
  • Go to Forms → Create a new form, enter your custom size.

Step 3: Use That Custom Size in Applications

In your software (e.g., Illustrator), choose Page Setup → Printer → Properties:

  • Under Paper/Quality, choose your newly created form.
  • Load the vinyl media and print. Many professionals report success with up to ~540 mm on the P1102 when using UPD drivers.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
