@Harleymark (I & My team shall stand with you until we get this sorted, so please bear with us)
Thank you for joining HP Forums.
I'll be glad to help you 🙂
As I understand the printer no longer wakes up from sleep,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
- Have you attempted to perform a hard reset to resolve the issue?
- Did you change the energy settings to make a difference to the way power consumption is managed on the printer?
While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:
Step 1: Change the energy settings
Your HP printer is designed to reduce power consumption when the printer is not active. Auto Power Off or Schedule On and Off enables the printer to turn off after two hours of inactivity. When you are ready to use your printer again, press the Power button to turn the printer back on.
Check the Schedule On and Off or Auto Power Off feature on the printer's control panel or through the software, depending on your printer model.
Change the energy settings from the control panel:
Navigate to the Setup menu, and then check the energy settings.
Open the Setup menu, and then click Preferences. Click Schedule Off, Auto Power Off or Auto-off, depending on your printer model, and then change any settings, if necessary.
Check the Schedule Off or Auto Power Off feature from the software
Check the Schedule Off or Auto Power Off feature with HP Printer Assistant for computers with Windows.
-
Search Windows for your printer model, and then select your printer in the list of results.
HP Printer Assistant opens.
-
Double-click Maintain Your Printer.
The Toolbox window opens.
-
Click the Advanced Settings tab, and then change the settings, if necessary.
Figure : Example of Advanced Settings Auto-Off enabled feature
-
Follow the on-screen prompts.
If you are unable to check the printer power settings or the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Restarting the printer might resolve any connectivity error states.
-
Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
-
Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
-
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
-
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
-
Wait at least 60 seconds.
-
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
-
Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
-
Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

I had the power plugged into a strip. I changed it to a direct wall plug and the printer seems to be working OK. Not sure if the power strip was the problem or the printer just needed a reset. I had also just installed the April 2018 version of Windows 10 when this problem started. In any case everything is good now.

It looks like I still have the problem: my 5740E goes to sleep and will not wake up when needed. This seems to happen if the unit is not used for a couple of days. When this occurs, the touch screen and power button do not react at all. I have to remove the power cord and re-install it to get it awake again. When it is in sleep mode and a print job is sent to the printer, the printer shows as offline. The printer is used entirely via wireless. When it does not wake up, the wirless light is still on but nothing else. I reiterate that the touch screen or power button have no reaction when this occurs. I am concerned also that my HP Instant Ink is not being monitored properly. I can't really tell what is happening when the brinter is in a coma. Got any ideas?
