HP6970 printer said update available, clicked install. Two hours latter it said downloaded and installing ...... after another half hour I shut it down and it rebooted and said it had failed. I downloaded firmware update to my computer and it found the printer. Clicked install. About 15 minutes it said install failed. How to fix?

@LeafErickson, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I understand you are not able to update the printer firmware. Let us try these steps:
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Make sure the printer is connected to the internet.
Update the printer firmware
Go to Setup > Printer maintenance > Update the printer
You may also check the current firmware version on the printer under printer maintenance.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
