OfficeJet Pro 8630
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have updated to the latest Windows 10 Update, 1903 May release, and am having issues with my HP 8630 printer. Initially the port was reset to "Print to File", which I couldn't change. I have uninstalled (using steps provided by HP on this forum) the drivers, and attempted reinstall several times. I have tried using HP Print and Scan Doctor with no resolution.

Note that I am installing for network access on this printer.

The printer setup never completes. It always ends at the point after the printer is found on the network, I select it, and a window with a progress bar appears stating "Installing network printer...". This churns for a very long time where it finally stops and reports "Unsuccessful Network Installation".

With Scan and Print Doctor, it realizes that the printer isn't configured and tries to complete. The result is the same, it sees the printer on the network, but can't complete the setup.

So it seems the drivers and other software are installed, however the final step to configure the printer to use in Windows fails.

@robgsmith,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I recommend you root uninstall the printer and then reinstall it and check if it helps.

Here is how it is done.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Restart the PC

14.) Download and install the printer software from the below link.

Thanks. I had seen these instructions to others and had tried this several times before posting. But, just to make sure I followed these again, to a tee.  Same result. The printer is seen on the network, however I end up with "Unsuccessful Network Installation".

I think the software for this printer has reached it's end-of-life. The current driver hasn't seen updates in over 3 years. As Windows evolves HP printer software gets left behind and eventually no longer works. It has happened to me several times and it looks like that time has come in this case.

I'm going to look tomorrow to see if I can find another printer. I'm hoping I can find a manufacturer that maintains their drivers.

@robgsmith,

I recommend you create a new user account on the computer following the steps in the below article and then install the printer and check.

Thanks for the reply and additional steps to try.

Before creating the new admin account, I followed the root deletion steps you provided to remove the printer and software again.

I created a new local admin account, and tried the install again from that account.

Exact same result as the previous attempts.

@robgsmith,

  • Have you tried installing this printer on a different computer?
  • Is the printer gets connected to the router?

Meanwhile, I recommend you restore the network defaults and then try connecting the printer to the network.

Here is how it is done.

1. From the printer control panel, touch and slide your finger across the screen, touch Setup, and then touch Network Setup.

2. Touch Restore Network Defaults, and then touch Yes. A message appears stating that the network defaults have been restored.

3. Touch OK.

4. Print the network configuration page and verify that the network settings have been reset.

Thank you.

I have not tried on another computer with the latest Windows 10 1903 build. I've held off updating the others until I try it on this one for a while. So far the only issue is that it broke the HP 8630 printer drivers and they can't be reinstalled.

I can try updating another computer to see if I have the same result.

I had updated Windows 10 on another computer today.

The one I have been communicating about thus far is a new Dell 9570 laptop (Intel based).

The second machine I updated to Windows 10 build 1903 is a desktop I built years ago (AMD based).

Upon updating to Windows 1903, the printer appeared to be working as I expected (unlike the the Dell laptop).

To test, I went through the removal of the HP printer and software from the desktop PC following your instructions.

I then ran the driver install and get the exact same results. The driver installs, and the HP 8630 is seen on the network, but the  setting up the printer t be used fails to complete.

@robgsmith,

I recommend you download and install the printer software from the below link and check if it helps.

After a fresh install of Windows 1903 the newest hp driver from the hp support site  for my network printer (HP8610) could not contact the printer thus installation failed. Disabling firewall did not help either.
Solution was: I opened the file "OJ8610_198" (this is the correct package for HP Officejet Pro 8610) with Right Mouse Click (Windows Explorer Context Menu) and choose the option "Handling compatibility issues or similar ...". Then I accepted the recommended solution (whatever it was) and now I could install everything without any problem !!!
