The HP 9125 does not seem to have the capability to easily switch between paper sizes, for instance, from 8,5x11, to envelope, to other. With my old HP 8600, I adjusted the tray for my envelope, the printer knew it was center feed, and and no other adjustments needed to be made. With the 9125e, you apparently have to go to the menu, go to the tray specification, and pick the size. What the heck? Are we now going backwards concerning this aspect too? (I am still fuming about the fact there is not cancel print from the printer itself). Am I missing something on the paper size?

Welcome to the HP English Community --
" Going backwards? "
Perhaps, though much of what a printer does has always depended on the features built into that model.
True -
This printer lacks a paper sensor.
The printer cannot tell the print job configuration what you want.
Without a second tray, the "default" options are limited to the single tray setup.
Automatic Paper Sensor | No |
The printer's own paper size / type controls are available using the printer's touchscreen Printer Control Panel and / or using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) on your device (computer, tablet, phone).

Note -
Although not the ideal application for the task; HP Smart can print an envelope --
The example illustrates the paper size settings.

Most of us went to the OfficeJet 9125e an an UPGRADE to our now defunct older printers. To say that some printers have a paper sensor and others don't in such a matter of fact way shows little concern for the consumer and the fact that it is a backwards approach to those of us who got used to our printers automatically switching to the right paper size. We have to manually enter the right paper size every time we switch paper? That is ridiculous just as the poorly made paper tray. I feel like I spent more for this printer and got a printer of much less quality. I have been using HP printers for at least 30 years. I may have to start thinking about a different printer based on some of the HP support comments made in this forum. At the very least, since most of us have been using printers that HAVE paper sensors, it should have been stipulated on the description that this printer has NO paper sensor. And it should have stipulated that the paper tray was poorly made. I definitely feel like i downgraded from my OfficeJet Pro 8710!
Very Disappointed,

OK -
I am sorry you are disappointed.
I'm not sure how else to describe the printer's capabilities -- if the hardware lacks a paper sensor, then the feature is simply not there.
To some extent, at least, how you set the defaults, what type(s) of paper you use, and the apps and software you use all impact how the printer responds.
I admit to being a creature of logic -- Generally the tendency serves me well enough though I can understand my version of "This is how it is" is not acceptable to everyone.
It is true that I might not come off as warm, inviting, and offering hugs when providing hardware answers.
That said, we do not answer questions with any intention to hurt the feelings of those who are asking for help.
Absolutely -- You must do as you wish -- all the big tech companies manufacture decent products --
You should have what you want.

We hope that others do not judge either.

Thank you Dragon-Fur for your response. You said you were a creature of logic. So tell me how this scenario is logical to you :
I am sitting at my desk and I am printing letters on letterhead. Great. Then I want to print envelopes to match. So I get out my envelopes and I put them into the tray. Then I hit print. But then the printer display tells me there is a mismatch and asks me to Modify, then I have to scroll through an endless choice of sizes till I find the right one. I select it then OK. Then I am done and want to print letters again. I change the paper, set the paper guides hit print. Oh no! You have to answer the question on the printer display again, hit modify, then scroll till I find and select Letter for paper size. And no where in any of the documentation prior to buying this printer did it say - No Automatic Paper Sensor. Logically speaking, since OLDER printers had this feature, wouldn't it have been important to highlight that the NEW printer no longer had this feature?
I have been using HP Printers for 30 years because of their dependability and customer service. I ALWAYS recommend them to family and friends. To dogmatically say we should have what we want is not very helpful. What I wanted was my new HP Printer to work like my old 8710. I do not know if you actually work for HP but if so, don't you think HP would want to know that they have customers who were so loyal before questioning whether or not they should continue buying their product?
If I gave you the impression I was criticizing you or judging you I am sorry for that. It may have come across that way because I am very, very frustrated with trying to find a printer that does what my last one did. And I really don't want to order printer after printer and have to return them because until I use the printer I do not know what it lacks. Logic, to me at least, is when you upgrade your printer you actually get an upgrade not a downgrade.
I am not sure if you actually use HP Printers but I don't think anyone in their right mind that prints every day will find it acceptable to have to stop what they are doing to tell the printer what it should already know. If you look at the specs of the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 (which I began using in Feb 2018) and then the 9125e (that I began using Dec 2024) you can see it lacks some basic functions, not to mention that the paper tray is flimsy and the paper guides do very little in the way of securing the paper. And I guess you are right, maybe it's time I look elsewhere since it is my prerogative to do so. I really wanted to stick with HP but I guess they are not the manufacturers they once were.
Have a great day!

No, I don’t work for HP.
I’ve been retired from the IT world for a long time — longer than is of interest.
I do not have answers for you.
Yes, I use HP tech - also not of interest — my experiences do not intersect with your own.
Perhaps start a new thread of your own and ask what you like.
I won’t answer further though I might certainly keep track of any progress.

Everything you said Linda Rocco! Why are we going backwards HP?!?
Let's go back to "rolling down the car window again", that is what I feel like the designer of this printer has done.

It's possible that I've missed something -- I have a similar printer but that means nothing to your experiences.
Perhaps open a new thread -- ask your question again - perhaps you will get an answer from another Expert, member, or Agent that intersects with what you want from the printer.

I appreciate you trying to help Dragon-Fur, but I was the one who made the original post and not sure of the reasoning of making another exact same post. However, if you were to tell me that HP actually pays attention to this forum and makes changes if things are asked repeatedly, I am in! I would ask it every day. If this post "means nothing to your experiences," it simply means to me that you do not go back and forth with paper/envelope sizes. I do, and now things are taking unnecessarily longer. Shortly after I made the original post, I did figure out what needed to be done. So, for anyone frustrated by the same functionality of this printer, there is a workaround. If you are reading, and you are still in the return period, return the thing. I missed it by a week.

Edit / Update
Creating a new thread allows you to start over and perhaps get a different answer from someone else.
The answers I've provided are perhaps not the only way to approach the subject.
Too, as noted, my way of describing things is not to everyone's taste.
Finally, I don't know of a way to bypass the printer's design --
That does not mean that there is not a solution, only that I am unaware of it.
In my experience, things change -- sometimes for the better and other times not-so-much.

Original Content
True -- I always purchase printers with two trays.
The only exception to the "two tray rule" is my Envy Photo 7855 -- That printer was a gift (not a purchase).
The little Envy has a single paper tray and a Photo paper tray that holds a few different sizes of small photo paper.
Yes, should I change the paper size / type in either tray on the Envy, I open EWS and adjust the paper size / type.
I double check the settings in the print job configuration to assure I will get what I expect.
EWS_7855_Preferences_Tray_and_Paper_Management_All_5
For the OfficeJet Pro 9135e --
I do not need to change the Tray and Paper unless I change the standard tray configurations I use as "default".
In this case, one tray holds #10 envelopes and the other tray holds regular office paper.
Should I want to use Photo Paper or other sized envelopes, then yes, I change the paper and then I change the EWS paper settings. Generally, too, I double check the Source (Tray) in the job configuration settings, though depending on what I find I might leave it "as found".
------------------------------------------------------------------
By all means, yes - HP should understand what people want.
Apparently single tray printers are too much work to maintain for daily use and should "read" (sense) the paper when it is changed. This way the user need not open EWS / Tray and Paper to modify the paper types.
I sympathize --
I think I don't care as much about the extra steps necessary to make things work -- most of my day in the Community is about testing, checking, changing, illustrating, and explaining.
These sorts of activities are much different from having to use a single tray printer to print, stack, correlate, change, update, and take care of the printer's needs when other tasks should take precedence.
