Hi TNGirl4Life,
Thank you for your post! I was starting to think I was the only one who was surprised and frustrated by HP downgrading what seems to be a simple feature. You said you figured out a workaround. Was that workaround to return the printer? I am still within my return window but I am at a loss to find a printer that is on the same level as my HP 8710, Do you have any recommendations? I spent literally hours trying to find a good replacement. I even checked other brands!
Thanks,
LindaRocco

My workaround was to answer the question about modifying the size and go in to the menu and change the size and then, when not printing an envelope, go into menu and change it back. Longer and unnecessary. It puzzles me as to why HP has taken the auto-sense functionality away. I have also complained about the fact there is no way to cancel a print (on the printer itself). I did try and take the printer back but was 2 days late from return window. After what you said, that you could not find another, makes me wonder if there are any better options. I liked my old HP fine, and it worked wonderfully until I purchased a new ink cartridge. It would not accept it or the 3 others I purchased, yet when I put back in the old, empty cartridge, no error message, just told me it was empty. It was strange and almost as if HP was forcing me to buy a new. Could that be? Not sure. Would love to know if you do find a new printer that is reminiscent of the good old ones.

Hi TNGirl4Life,
I couldn't find another printer that had the other features that I needed so I too have to waste time, unnecessarily, to keep modifying the paper size on the printer panel. It's a good thing my printer is close by. If it was across the room it would be really inconvenient. I don't know why HP would have taken away such basic things away as an automatic paper sensor or no ability to cancel the job from the printer. My guess is they don't actually use the printers they sell, at least not on a daily basis. My problem occurred when I replaced my toner also. I had my printer for 8 years so I don't suspect HP was forcing me to buy a printer. I believe it could very well be the print head but it is expensive to repair and if it ends up not being the print head then it's waste of money. I would have tried that option first if my printer wasn't so old. But I LOVED that printer. It was a workhorse and NEVER gave me a problem until last month when I tried to replace the cartridge. I figure I'll keep this new printer for a couple years and hopefully they'll address these issues and give us a printer we can use that works like we are used to. Until then I'll use this printer begrudgingly and muttering under my breath every time I have to answer that prompt on the printer display and scroll through the choices till I find what I'm looking for. Not counter productive at all. 😞 I did send a message to HP regarding this issue. Hopefully they will keep it in mind. I'm sure they won't attempt to address the issue for now.
