HP Color Laser MFP 178nw
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Hi,

I cannot insert the paper tray of the HP Color Laser MFP 178nw printer all the way, as originally delivered and shown on the packaging.

Please tell me how I can insert the tray completely when the tray is empty.

There are no technical drawings or explanations about this in the user manual.

Thank you.

Hi @HannahTJ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To ensure that the paper tray of your HP Color Laser MFP 178nw printer is fully inserted, follow these steps.

Check the Tray Orientation: Make sure the tray is oriented correctly. The tray should have a notch or guide that aligns with the printer.

Adjust the Paper Guides: If the tray has adjustable paper guides, ensure they are set to the correct width for the paper you intend to use. If the guides are too wide, it can prevent the tray from being fully inserted.

Insert the Tray:

  • Slide the tray into the printer gently but firmly. Make sure it is aligned properly with the guides.
  • If the tray is not going in easily, try to pull it out slightly and then push it back in while ensuring it is straight.

Look for Obstructions: Inspect the tray and the printer for any obstructions that may be preventing the tray from seating properly. Check for any debris or foreign objects in the tray slot.

Test the Empty Tray: Sometimes, the tray can be a bit stiff when empty. Ensure that there is no warping in the tray itself that may be causing it to stick out. If it appears to be warped, it may need to be replaced.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your reply.

The paper tray sticking out has nothing to do with technical issues or handling: it is a design feature that was not clearly communicated by HP. All images with this printer show the tray inserted completely -as the consumer receives it before use.

There should be a way to insert the tray completely when empty, since that how I received it.

I would like to ask HP to live up to its duty and promise here: support.

HP, please check the user manual and check in with the technical support team. Then share a clear guideline with technical images on how to insert the tray completely when empty.

I am not the first one to ask this question, but so far there is no answer.

Looking forward to a clear answer,

Cheers!
