i did everything mentioned in this thread, step by step, and the printer did not print. It only printed a Test Page via the Print/Scanner Doctor software, but no actual printing of documents.

The spooling starts and the document disappears....... same old **bleep** story I am sorry to say.

Now what happens to the Reistry entries that I amended as per this thread?

There are so many 'What' questions I need to ask that I am really FED UP with this wretched printer.

How dare HP sell such a printer if it is not going to work? It looks like I am not the only one with this problem....

So, what would I do when I buy a new printer?

How will therse registry changes affect the new printer on the very same HP PC?

Someone please help me as I am really, really fed up with this printer.

The irony is that I have on network another HP printer 5520 which prints on both of my PC's - Dell and HP.

I would like to have my HP PC to its previous state before I did all these .old changes in the registry.

Any help will be appreciated.

 I followed the steps on this Solved Solution, quoted below and it did not work me.

**Be aware that if you have other printers installed on your PC, those will need to be reinstalled too once completing these steps.

1. Uninstall the HP Software from your PC.
2. Backup your registry prior making any registry changes:
    https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03485724
3. Update your registry using the Reg file below (that will change some printer related policies for your PC):
     https://www.dropbox.com/s/avbv56zdgwv7600/kernel.reg?dl=1
4. Right click the Start menu and select Run.
     Type Services.msc and press OK.
      Locate and stop the Print Spooler service
5. Browse to c:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers.
      Rename W32X86 to W32x86.old
      Rename x64 to x64.old
      Note: if any of these folders fail to delete reboot your PC and then Continue following the steps starting from Step 4...
6. Restart your computer.
7. Reinstall the HP Software and check for any difference

I would like to add that I have another printer on the network HP Photosmart 5520 and that one prints on both my computers - Dell and HP.  I have done everything possible with my modest computer knowledge. If there is no solution, can someone please tell me how can I revert my Pavilion to its original registry (I have saved a copy of the old registry) and also can I just delete the old W32X86.old and X64.old folders?
I am now more concenred about the changes made to my PC than having the printer work (which willl be good though to have it work).

As suggested in the thread, have you created a back up of your registry prior to making changes?

If you have backed up the registry, you can restore it to the previous configuration.

Refer to this document from Microsoft for restoring the registry.

Atharva_GP, thank you for your response.

Yes, I have a backed up copy of the old registry and will try and import it back to the Registry today.

 

Moreover, what happens to the amended folders spoor/drivers  that were marked W32X86.old and x64.old as per the previous instructions to make this printer work (which did not work)?  Do I or can I just delete these .old folders?

Importing the old registration did not work:

I got the following prompt:

"cannot import C:\users\my name\Desktop\Old registration files.reg. Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes, or you have insufficient priviliges to perform this opeation."

What does this mean ?

The error means you may not have permissions to make changes to the Windows registry.

 

Try to restore the Windows using a restore point created. You can search for a previous restore point created and restore the PC to the previous configuration. 

  • Enter Control Panel in the search box, and tap or click Control Panel.
  • Enter Recovery in the Control Panel search box, and then tap or click Recovery.
  • Tap or click Open System Restore, and then follow the instructions.

Check if you can restore it to the previous configuration using this.
