HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 5645 All-in-One Printer

My HP DekJet Ink Advantage 5645 has "status unknown" in the HP Smart app:

 

Printer Information

Name:                        HP DJ 5640 series

Status:                       Printer status unknown

Model Name:           HP DeskJet 5640 Series

Installation Status: installed

Connection Type:    USB

Connection Status: Active

Serial Number:        ####

 

The printer and scanner work fine with the Full Feature Software and Drivers, however the HP Smart is proving to be anything but "smart".

 

I've uninstalled the printer and all traces of the drivers repeatedly, reinstalled HP Smart with the Windows default drivers, ran all HP repair tools (which say no problems were detected), the result is the same: printer status unknown.

 

I don't want/need any networking/wi-fi/EWS bs, I just want to "plug and play" my printer via USB.

 

Bottom line: is my DJ 5645 compatible with HP Smart (USB connection ONLY), and if so how do I fix this error, or do I foget about HP Smart and just go on with the tried and trusted Full Feature Software and Drivers?

 

PS: the firmware is updated to 1831A
