iMac
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I updated my iMac to Catalina 10.15.   The Deskjet 1510 wouldn't work, so I got the HP Easy Start software from the HP website.

I have "downloaded and installed" the new software but the printer still doesn't work.

I can't see where on the iMac the software has actually been installed, and I don't think it's there...even though I watched the whole process happening on screen.

@kw29me, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Do you get any errors while trying to print?

Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

If you are using a USB cable, make sure the cable is directly connected between the MAC and the printer.

The use of a USB hub is not recommended. Also, make sure the cable is connected to a USB 2.0 port on your MAC.

Do you have an Anti-virus/firewall installed on the MAC?

  • Check if the printer is getting recognized by your MAC:
  1. From the Apple menu, choose About This Mac.
  2. Click System Report.
  3. Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB.

USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus. The printer should be under the USB 2.0 Bus

To check if the HP printer driver is installed,

  1. Click Finder in the Dock.

  2. In the menu bar, click Go, click Applications, and then open the HP or Hewlett Packard folder.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

thanks for your reply

What happens is that I click on 'Print' on any document and it seems to start printing, but then after about 3% it stops and I get a message saying "Waiting for printer to become available", and then nothing else happens.

There is no network or multiple terminals, It is just one printer and one iMac. The iMac sees the printer and it registers on all the print menus. I have cleared and reset the print lists etc....but nothing happens.

I have checked all cable connections, switched off and restarted etc etc.

I've just noticed on your checklist,  you told me to check the USB bus on System Hardware.  I don't appear to have a USB 2 bus, I only have a USB 3 bus on the iMac.

This problem didn't exist with previous versions of Mac OS.

The USB 3.0 ports are backward compatible with USB 2.0 cables.

Do you have any anti-virus program installed on the MAC?

Were you able to make a copy on the printer?

Did you check in the applications folder if the HP folder exists to make sure the printer driver is installed?

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

Try printing.

Let me know how this goes.

Thanks again.

I don't have any anti-virus programmes.

However, from the beginning I noticed there was nothing in the Applications Folder when I had supposedly "downloaded and installed" the software from the HP website - even after I did it several times. I had uninstalled the old software, and nothing has replaced it.

I guessed that was causing the problem. Will updating printer firmware fix that ?

If the HP folder is not available, let us try to reinstall the printer driver

Update the printer firmware

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

Click here to download the printer driver.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Try printing.

Let me know how this goes.

Still no luck.

I downloaded and installed printer driver from your link. It's the same location I've taken it from before, but still doesn't work.

There was no option to update the firmware, which implies that it's up to date anyway.

The download and install for drivers and software goes through all the moves, but when you look in the Applications > Printers folder there's nothing there. It isn't installing anything anywhere....even though the read-out on the HP page says it is.

And everything on the iMac is up to date.

In your previous replies, you have mentioned that you have USB 3.0 bus, but is the printer listed under USB 3.0 bus?

Keep me posted.

Sorry for the delay, I missed  your last reply.

I've looked under the USB3 list and yes, the printer is listed there.

Go to System Information > Applications and check for and uninstall any anti-virus program if any.

Reset the printing system as shown in this document.

Uninstall any HP software that might have been installed, and then add the printer.

  1. Download and open HP Easy Start.

  2. Open the HP Easy Start drop-down menu, and then click Uninstall HP Software.

    Clicking Uninstall HP Software

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall all HP software.

Now, download and install the driver from here

Let me know how this goes.
