Hello,
I have a really old HP Deskjet 3630 printer (F5S43-10003). I have not used it in a few years, it has a CD for installation. I just ordered a new laptop (MacBook Air, M3 chip, Mac OS 14 Sonoma). Will WiFi direct work without using the CD to install it? Alternatively, what are the steps to set up the printer in this scenario?
I look forward to your response.

Hi @Maddy97,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are trying to set up your HP DeskJet 3630 on your MacBook Air M3 without using the CD. Here’s how to do it:
Using Wi-Fi Direct
Turn on the Printer: Make sure your HP DeskJet 3630 is powered on.
Enable Wi-Fi Direct:
- On the printer’s control panel, press the Wireless button and then the Information button (i.e., the "i" button). This will print a page with the Wi-Fi Direct credentials.
- Note the Wi-Fi Direct network name (SSID) and password from this page.
Connect MacBook to Printer:
- On your MacBook Air, go to System Preferences > Network.
- Click the + button to add a new network.
- Select Wi-Fi from the interface dropdown.
- From the list of available networks, choose the Wi-Fi Direct network name you noted from the printer's page and connect to it using the provided password.
Install the Printer:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Click the + button to add a new printer.
- Your HP DeskJet 3630 should appear in the list of available printers. Select it and click Add.
Using HP Smart App
Alternatively, you can use the HP Smart app:
Download HP Smart:
- Go to the Mac App Store and download the HP Smart app.
Install and Open HP Smart:
- Open the HP Smart app and follow the instructions to add your printer. It will search for printers on the network.
Set Up the Printer:
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup. The HP Smart app should guide you through connecting your printer to your Wi-Fi network and configuring it with your MacBook Air.
Using AirPrint
Your HP DeskJet 3630 supports AirPrint, so you can print directly from your MacBook Air without needing to install additional drivers:
Connect Printer and MacBook to the Same Network:
- Ensure that both your HP DeskJet 3630 and MacBook Air are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Print Using AirPrint:
- Open a document or image you want to print.
- Go to File > Print or use the Command + P shortcut.
- Select your HP DeskJet 3630 from the list of available printers.
- Click Print.
