HP Deskjet F2280
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I'm experiencing problems with an HP Deskjet F2280 printer. The operating system is Windows 10 Pro 32 Bit, Ver 1803.

I recently  installed the latest printer driver for the F2200 series and the printer worked fine until a week ago when it stopped printing. I assume it was after the Windows 1803 update.

I tried numerous times to uninstall and re-install the driver, with no success.

I tested the printer on another Windows 10 system (Ver 1709) by installing the same driver and it worked fine so the printer is not faulty.

The driver software installs up to the part where you need to plug in the USB-cable and it continues with "Configuring Product" - after a while it times out with a critical error "23090136".

Error Message 1.jpg

I also downloaded an ran the Diagnostic tool and the tool identified a "driver" problem, but in the information sent to HP, it listed the operating system as Windows Server 2008 which is incorrect, it should be Windows 10 Pro.

Error Message 2.jpg

Any help would be appreciated!

Johan.

@Johan_Con,

I am back and I have gone through your responses comprehensively. You've done an awesome job by displaying total commitment, brilliant technical skills and a never say die spirit to try and resolve the issue. Kudos yo you for a job well done. As @ Jeet_singh is out for the day, I am responding on his behalf.

The printer works fine with another computer suggesting that it is not the printer but the computer's operating system that tis the culprit here. So the best course of action at our disposal here is to backup your important data first. Then perform these steps:

  • First, try performing a push button reset of Windows 10 by following instructions from this link: HP PCs - Reset the computer
  • If the correct on-screen instructions are followed, then there should be no data loss. Then reinstall the printer drivers and check if ti works.

This should do the trick for you.

  • If this does not do the trick, please download the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2o3acvH
  • Perform steps 2 and 3 to remove the printer and re-add it. This should do the trick for you. There is an associated YouTube video on how to do it.

If the issue still persists, then reinstall Windows 10 from the recovery media or recovery partition by following the guided troubleshooter from this link (HP PCs - Performing a System Recovery (Windows 10)

Then reinstall the printer drivers and this should fix the issue.

Now trust me, I've done all I can to assist you by keeping your best interest in mind. I hope things work great for you. It has been an absolute privilege to share this platform with you and a genuine pleasure to work with you.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed year ahead. Stay healthy and smile big. 🙂

@Johan_Con,

Good Day.  Thank you for taking an interest in the HP community. I understand that you require assistance regarding issues with installing the printer on the computer after a Windows 10 update. (1803) I will be really glad to assist you here. 🙂

Fabulous description and superb diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • DId you try a root level uninstall and reinstall of the HP drivers?
  • Did you try installing Windows built-in drivers and check?

For now, try these steps:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer, if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.

Log into the new user account after restarting your computer.

Then download the latest full feature driver from   https://hp.care/2tcXPhc and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix the issue.

If this does not do the trick, please download the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2o3acvH

  • Perform steps 2 and 3 to remove the printer and re-add it. This should do the trick for you. There is an associated YouTube video on how to do it.

This should work for you.

Perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response.  Please note that I am not overloading you with steps but instead, giving you more information to work with.

We are as eager as you are to get the issue fixed. I request you to perform all these steps till the issue is fixed.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Hi David

I have tried your recommendations and followed all the steps to the letter. Unfortunately it did not solve my problem.

All the latest Windows updates are installed. (Windows 10 Pro Ver 1803)

I downloaded the latest printer driver from the HP website.

I also tried to install another printer (HP Officejet 6700 Premium) and I had the same problem. All the software installs, but when I connect the printer's USB cable, I get a "Fatal  Error During Installation" after a while.

I think I have proved that I have a USB problem. I even tried to update the USB Device drivers, but all the drivers are up to date. I followed all the steps in the Troubleshooter, ie do a selective startup instead of a normal startup.

I even tried another usb cable.

I also tried to install the Windows Built In drivers for both printers, but I get an "Unable to install printer" error message for both.

As a last resort I updated my laptop to Ver 1803 to see if I get the same problem with the 1803 version on the laptop. The only difference is that my laptop's operating system is Windows 10 Home Ver 1803 64 Bit and the other computer's system is Windows Pro 32 bit. After the update was installed, Windows updated the printer drivers automatically and both printers worked fine on the laptop.

Is there anything else I can try or is the only alternative to reinstall Windows and start from scratch?

I have a Word Document with all the screen prints of the error messages, but the file is 25Mb. I can email it to you if you would like to have a look at it.

@Johan_Con,

As I see that you have performed extensive troubleshootings and this has clearly confirms that it's not a printer hardware. It's an issue with computer.

Let's try to create a new user account and then install the printer and check.

Before creating a new user account, I would suggest you go ahead and uninstall the printer. Once done restart the computer.

Now create a new user account and then try to install the printer. Follow the steps here to create a local account on your PC: Create a local user or administrator account in Windows

Let me know how it goes for further assistance!

Hi Jeet.

I have already created a local administrator account and installed the driver from that account, but that did not help either. I ALWAYS uninstall the printer and restart before attempting a reinstall.

Maybe I should delete the second user account and create a new administrator account and try again.

I also considered restoring windows to an earlier version, but there was no restore point available.

I have really tried anything I could think of, but nothing seems to work.

Hi David

Finally I had to Reset Windows as there was no 'Restore Point' or 'Rollback To A Previous Version Of Windows' available.

After the reset, the Windows Version was still 1803, but the printer driver installed perfectly.

Unfortunately I lost most of my apps and had to download and install them again.  All my personal files were kept.

Thanks for all your help!
