In system preferences, it says that the printer is in "Idle". I change to "resume" but it still will not change it out of Idle. I have clicked on everything, including "Resume" and nothing changes. Where do I go to fix this. The first problem I had is when I installed a new color cartridge and it kept saying it was empty and wouldn't print. Since the printer is old, I decided to buy a new wireless hp printer and tried to install it. I am totally inept with computers and got frustrated and decided to return the new printer. Now, the old one won't work. I do have an older Dell computer and I can print from it on this printer. Just need to know how to fix the Mac.
Thank you,

@Kathy130, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I understand you are not able to print from your Mac.
Try making a standalone copy from the flatbed glass and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.
Also, check the USB connection. Reconnect.
This printer is not AirPrint compatible and has no printer driver available on the HP Support site to work on macOS 10.13 due to its age.
This printer does not support the HP Smart app too on a Mac.
For more info on this issue, refer to this document.
However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.
NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.
