HP Deskjet 2520hc
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Hi Everyone,

Ever since upgrading to Mac OS Sonoma 14.x, my HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2520hc printer has stopped working. I am on the latest Mac OS Sonoma 14.6.1 release and using HP Easy Start, I have installed the latest available drivers.

The printer gets added properly to the Mac Control Center and I am able to scan the documents. But when i try to print anything, the printing queue gets stuck with message: "Waiting for printer to be available". It never prints, i tried waiting for couple of hours.

Seems to me like a Mac HP driver problem because if i expose the same printer to a Linux or Windows OS running on the same Mac in a VM, i am able to print just fine from within that environment. But the Mac print queue is unable to push the print.

HP Seems to have forgotton this model for Mac now, the latest available driver is from October 2023 which is not working. Is there any way to request for an update from HP or any workaround for this issue?

Hi @Sumit-Bhardwaj,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I see that you are facing an issue with your Printer that is not printing.

A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) If the issue still persists, uninstall the printer software by following the steps from this link and restart the devices.

D)  Install the printer software by clicking on the link again and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Note: Enable Bluetooth for an HP Smart app setup: Enable Bluetooth on your computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day

Hi Irwin6,

Thanks for the reply. I tried all the steps mentioned, line by line, point by point but the problem remains. And as I told in my original mail, without doing anything else, if I give a print command from within a Linux or Windows virtual machine running on the same Macbook air, the printer prints instantly. So the problem seems to be with the CUPS driver that HP has supplied. It was working till MacOS 14.0 but stopped working after that at some point release. There are no driver updates available post October 2023 on HP's website.

I have the latest driver installed vial HP Easy Start utility, there are no firmware updates available. HP Smart print app does not support this printer as it is not wifi enabled and its not from HP+ series.

I have also tried cleanly removing all HP software via the official uninstall utility and reinstalling everything again on two of my Mac systems but have got same result.
