HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I tried all the advice in the forum under an article marked as Solved.  However it did not work for me.    I have updated all the drivers, printer firmware etc.  It feels like an update has broken the printer driver on windows.  Iphone printing still works.  I know printer connecred to lan and internet.  scanning to pc still works.

Hi @kendosuk,

Allow me to welcome to HP Support Forums! It is a great platform to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others! I see that you are having issues while installing the Envy printer on your Windows 10 system. I would recommend a clean install of your printer as suggested below:

First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.

Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

Restart your computer.

Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.

Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.

Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".

Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.

Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (there is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.

Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

Open run again, type “%temp%” and press enter to get the temporary files. Delete all the files here. Skip the items which cannot be deleted.

Now restart your computer again.

Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.

Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.

Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.

Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.

Now click on this link: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL61220/mp-147799-1/EN4520_Full_WebPack_1122.exe and then install the updated printer software.

Connect the USB cable only when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Now restart the computer and then try to print and check how it performs.

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to try using the windows built-in drivers instead of the original printer drivers. The issue might be with the printer drivers that you have installed. You can install the windows printer driver and then check:

Restart you PC & the printer. Connect the USB cable.

Go to Control Panel - Devices and printers - Click on "Add printer".

While the Windows is searching for the printer, click "The printer I want is not listed".

Now click the option which says "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings".

In the next windows, select "Use an existing port". "LPT1" will be selected by default. From the drop down menu change that to "USB..." port and click next.

When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.

Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.

Go to http://hp.care/2bYE4kP and follow the "Step 3" for instructions.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

Thanks Jeet.

I followed your instructions to the letter - learned some new things along the way too!

Some partially  good news - I just printed something!  But that is only as I connected via USB.

I initially tried wireless - it found the printer and allowed me to select it, but it then sits at the "installing network device" screen until it times out and fails.

I then rummaged around for a USB cable, found one and plugged in - that did the trick.

I then tried to reconfigure the printer driver as wireless using the "convert USB device to wireless" and again it gets stuck on that screen.  See the image here:

So I am in a better place, but need to take my PC to the printer.  Please note - printing from iPhone still works fine over wireless - That is how I have been working the past week!

So the issue appears to be related to adding a wireless port to the PC?

Not sure if its related but I got this in the event log.  I cannot say if it is from the printer software but there is nothing else (apart from this web page) being used by me right now.

Kind Regards

Ken.

Hi @kendosuk,

As I understand you have tried the steps suggested and still having the issue, don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help you resolve this issue.

The following steps temporarily disconnect network and Internet connections and require restarting your computer. Complete any tasks or downloads in progress before continuing.

1. Press the Power button on the printer to turn it off.

2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

3. Disconnect the power cord from the wireless router.

4. Turn off the computer.

5. Wait for 30 seconds.

6. Reconnect the power cord to the wireless router.

7. Wait for 30 seconds, or until the router is fully on and ready

8. Turn the computer back on.

9. Wait for the computer to reload

10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

11. Turn the printer back on.

Let’s try assigning a static IP to try and fix this issue. Follow the steps below:

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
  • Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Once done, reinstall the printer drivers. Follow the steps below:

  • Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click on  http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL61220/mp-147799-1/EN4520_Full_WebPack_1122.exe  to download and install the updated printer drivers.
  • In the connection type window, select “Wireless” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.  If they did, that’s awesome!  Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons, that’ll help us and others see that we’ve got the answers!

Hi Jeet.,

The IP is static, but issued by the DHCP server where it is configured as static.  I found that before when the IP would change the scanning and printing would fail.

I have now added the printer over wireless using the normal windows print dialog.  THIS DID NOT WORK BEFORE.  The HP software still hangs, and through the last round of testing it was all focussed on the HP software.

During that process part of the issue must have been fixed as far as fixing the standard windows printer wizards.

So I thank you for your help - I can print again!

I shall ignore the HP software now.

Thanks again - It was quite an anooying situation.

Kind Regards

Ken.
