HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

After following the instructions to the letter here -> https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Errors-or-Lights-Stuck-Print-Jobs/Printer-preferences-excepti.... the printer appears in device manager, Printers and Scanners etc and all appears to be well BUT when I run the app HP Envy 5540 Series. exe, it used to display "Getting data from printer", or similar followed by allowing me to select PRINT or SCAN.  It now always runs devicesetup.exe so that I can add a printer (which I don't need to do).  Any ideas please ?

HI @oc16

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It seems like the HP ENVY 5540 Series.exe application is redirecting to DeviceSetup.exe instead of displaying the expected PRINT or SCAN options. This issue might be caused by corrupted software or incorrect installation.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

1. Reinstall the Full Feature Software

  • Uninstall the current printer software:
    1. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
    2. Select the HP ENVY 5540 software and click Uninstall.
  • Download and install the full feature software for your printer from the HP Support website.
  • Restart your computer after installation.

2. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  • This tool can diagnose and fix common software issues, including problems with the HP ENVY 5540 Series.exe application.

3. Check for Software Updates

  • Ensure that the HP ENVY 5540 Series.exe application is updated to the latest version.
  • Visit the HP Support Community for any updates or patches related to this issue.

4. Reset Printer Settings

  • On the printer's control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Reconfigure the printer settings after the reset.

5. Use HP Smart App

  • If the issue persists, consider using the HP Smart app as an alternative. It provides similar functionality for printing and scanning.

Let me know how it goes or if you'd like more detailed guidance on any of these steps! 😊

Sorry - I've tried the exact process you described a couple of times with the same result without success.  Prior to doing all that, I tried just uninstalling the printer (WiFi connected) and then reinstalling  (automatic install did not work, manual install did) but I then, after loading hp,,,exe, it switched to devicesetup.exe  Hopefully that clarifies things a bit for you.

Thanks for explaining in detail.

It seems like your HP ENVY 5540 Series printer software is stuck in a loop, running devicesetup.exe instead of displaying the expected PRINT or SCAN options. This issue could be related to corrupted software, outdated drivers, or a misconfigured installation.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Perform a Clean Uninstallation

  1. Uninstall Printer Software:
    • Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
    • Locate the HP ENVY 5540 Series software and uninstall it.
  2. Remove Printer from Devices:
    • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your printer and select Remove Device.
  3. Delete Driver Files:
    • Press Windows + R, type printui.exe /s, and press Enter.
    • Go to the Drivers tab, select the HP printer driver, and click Remove.

Update Printer Firmware

  1. Check for firmware updates on the HP Support page.
  2. Install the firmware update and restart the printer.

Reset Printer Settings

  1. Restore the printer to factory defaults:
    • On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
  2. Reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network and test the software again.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
