HP Envy printer not printing in color and does not give any option to turn on color in any of the setting or printing preferences.

it used have an option to choose black or color only. even after uninstalling software and drivers still no option and does not fix with latest install. For now I have had to print thru my phone only but tedious to do every time.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your HP ENVY 5540 stops printing in color, especially when the option to select color printing is missing. Let’s walk through a few steps to get this resolved.

Check Printer Preferences

Sometimes the color option may be hidden due to driver or settings issues.

  • Press Windows + R, type control printers, and press Enter.
  • Right-click on your HP ENVY 5540 printer > Printing Preferences.
  • Look for a Color or Advanced tab.
  • Ensure Print in Grayscale is unchecked.
  • If you don’t see the option, proceed to the next step.

Uninstall and Reinstall the Printer Driver (Full Feature Software)

The basic driver may not include full color management options.

  • Uninstall the printer from Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Go to Apps & Features and uninstall any HP printer software.
  • Restart your PC.

Now download and install the Full Feature Software from HP: Official HP® Support

Choose Full Feature Software and Drivers, not just the basic driver.

Check Color Cartridge Health

  • On the printer control panel, print a Test Page or Print Quality Report.
  • If color is missing, the cartridge may be empty or clogged.
  • Try cleaning the printhead from the printer’s Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead.

Try Printing from Another App

Sometimes the issue is app-specific. Try printing a color document from:

  • Word
  • Photos app
  • HP Smart app

If it works from your phone but not from the PC, it’s likely a driver or software issue on the PC.
