Trying to connect HP ENVY Inspire 7955e printer to HP laptop via USB cable. No consistent internet connection...using hotspot from phone to do setup. There is a driver, uncertain if it's current (no options to update or even check if current). Computer can see printer but shows as printer offline. The printer IS on and appears in device list when USB cable is connected. What can we do to get this setup completed?

Hi @MommaDuckJen, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Since you are setting up the HP ENVY Inspire 7955e on a laptop using a USB connection without consistent internet, follow these steps:

Ensure Proper USB Connection

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and computer.
  2. Restart both the printer and laptop.
  3. Reconnect the USB cable to a different USB port on your laptop (preferably a USB 2.0 port if available).
  4. If using a USB hub, plug the cable directly into the laptop instead.

Install the Latest HP Drivers (Without Internet)

Since your internet connection is unstable, try downloading the driver from another device that has internet access:

  1. On a device with internet, go to HP’s official driver page.
  2. Search for HP ENVY Inspire 7955e and download the Full Feature Software and Driver.
  3. Transfer the downloaded file to your laptop via USB flash drive.
  4. Run the installation file and select USB connection when prompted.

Verify Printer in Windows Settings

  1. Open Control PanelDevices and Printers.
  2. Locate the HP ENVY Inspire 7955e.
  3. Right-click the printer and choose Set as Default Printer.
  4. Right-click again and select See what's printing → Click Printer (top-left) → Uncheck Use Printer Offline (if checked).

Restart Print Spooler

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down to Print Spooler, right-click, and select Restart.
  3. Close the window and check if the printer is now online.

Try a Different USB Cable or Port

  • If the printer remains offline, try a different USB cable or test on another computer to rule out hardware issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
