I'm trying to update the firmware on my Officejet Pro 8715 printer but the Easy Start software cannot find the printer. The printer has been working fine for at least two years. The computer sees the printer just fine when I go to- Control Panel- Devices and Printers. It copies just fine from the scanner glass.   I'm updating the firmware because there is a possibility the printer was hacked using the phone line for the fax connection and  it is printing smeared pages when I try to print documents from the computer. Also, when I go to the  "HP8710" page from Control Panel, it will not let me access "Customize Your Printer"- it fails to open and let me adjust security settings. Also, I installed Print & Scan Doctor and it will not communicate with the printer- it just keeps trying and trying- for an hour, so far.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Support Community.

 

Seems to be a connection issue.  Anyway, try this to update firmware from the Control panel.

 

Try to connect the printer to the network, this resource will be useful.

 

After that, try using the HP FULL featured software instead of the HP Smart app.

Go to Software - Utility ,  download "HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Print and Scan Driver and Accessories" and install.

 

After a successful install, you should be able to print and scan.
