We have had many HP LaerJet Enterprise Flow MFP M631h and M528c eventually come up with this firmware error 98.00.00c and the system will not boot. Its not pingable or remotely able to be troubleshoot in this state either. The fix is to load the latest HP Furturesmart firmware on a USB stick and have it plugged in. Power on the printer and tap the HP logo on the display and enter the preboot diagnostic menu. There is an Administrator log in code we have documented in our help desk software that lets you format the drive and then reinstall the firmware from the USB stick.
This resolves the issue only for a limited time though. What we end up having to do is buy a new secure hard drive from HP, which is about $600. Yet its a spinning disk but it has some kind of encryption technology on it. We don't really care about encrypting it, we don't allow storing print jobs to the drive anyway, but even if we tried a cheap $40 2.5 inch hard drive from Amazon - even same brand (Seagate) it will not accept it.
So since these only last a year or two at most, which is odd because i have spinners that are going on 10+ years and still working fine in PC's...... I'd like to get an SSD version of this drive. We just got 5 new MFP m528's in and deployed them. I noticed when I was installing the fax module that where the hard drive would normally be, it looked more like a SATADOM (SSD). Can we get an SSD that is compatible that works with the older model m528's and m631's that have the pull out keyboard? The only other difference on the new one is there's no pull out keyboard which I suspect is just a supplier issue in today's tech shortage world.
Appreciate if anyone has a more reliable solution than spinning disks for these $3000
HP says the part is J8J64A 5851-6712 Kit-FIPS HDD 500GB Is this correct?
