I am trying to reinstall my printer software. When I go thru the install I get a message that the installation is complete but does not take me thru the wireless setup screen. I can print from the computer wirelessly but the printer assistant is nowhere to be found. It does not show up as an Icon on the desktop. I beleive the software setup detected part of the original installation and skips part of the installation. I need to know how to erase all traces of the original installation

Greetings!
Welcome to the HP Support Community. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries. I have reviewed your post and I understand, there's an issue with the printer installation.
Don’t worry, I’m here to help!
Let's try these steps -
1) In the search box, type and open "Uninstall a Program".
2) Look for HP Printer software.
3) Right-click to uninstall.
4) In the search box, type and open “Devices and printers”.
5) In the Devices and Printers, look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose “Delete” or “Remove Device”.
6) Open the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”).
8) Click on the "Drivers" tab.
9) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click “Remove” at the bottom.
10) Select Ok.
11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows.
12) Close Devices and Printers Once the software and drivers are removed.
13) Restart the computer.
14) Download and install the software and drivers from here.
Hope this helps!
Let me know how that goes.

I followed those steps, however when I got to step # 9, I got the message that driver couldn't be removed because it was in use. So I went to REGEDIT and I deleted the HP drivers there, then I could complete step # 9. I reinstalled and got the same results where the software is not listed in the remove progrram list.
All is well though. My final goal was to fix the problem with the Printer Assistant Icon that stopped functioning when I upgraded to Windows 10 and when I reinstalled under Windows 10, the Printer Assistant would not show up. A little further investigating and I found the HP Smart app which looks like the old Printer Assistant.
Guess I should have stated my final goal and not my solution to get there.
