HP Envy 4520 Scanning Software - HP Smart update loop

Bought a new HP laptop (big mistake, why did I do that?).  Trying to use my HP Envy 4520 scanner. 

I can already print and I can scan with "Windows Fax and Scan" but that program is terrible.  I want the software I used to have with it.  

Went to download the driver online.  It tries to get me to download HP Smart.  When I do it tells me it needs an update, no other option.  So I click update, which sends me back to the download screen, so I download, and it says it needs an update, no other option.  So I click update, which sends me back to the download screen, so I download, and it says it needs an update, no other option.  So I click update, which sends me back to the download screen, so I download...

There is an "HP Envy 4520 series" icon on my desktop, so I click that, it takes me to device setup.  I go through that whole process, I registered it and got the confirmation and everything, but there is no new software on my laptop.  When I click on the icon again, it takes me back to Device Setup.  

What is going on?!?!?!!?   How do I scan something?

For Windows machines, try HP Scan Extended using the following software

              ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once it's downloaded and installed, for Windows 10:

    (a) Hit Win key,
    (b) Scroll down to HP group/folder,
    (c) Double click "HP Scan Extended"

You can put a shortcut on Taskbar or Desktop

When I click that link a Chrome tab opens and immediately closes and nothing has been downloaded.

I copied your link to Edge and it's downloading now.

Downloaded the program, opened it, got a message "Scanner communication cannot be established... restart the product and try scanning again."  I restarted the printer, no dice.  I printed a test page, it printed so I know the connection is good.  

It says I might need to update the IP address. I searched how to do that.  It says to open the Printer Assistant.  I can't open the printer assistant because the driver refuses to download to my machine.

Why is this so hard?!?!?!!?  They're both your products!

It's been 7 hours guys, no word from you and I still can't scan a pdf.  Are we done here or what?  Should I just throw the printer off a freeway overpass and buy a product from another company that actually works?

It's now been a week and I have no response from you.  Seriously, should I just throw the HP printer out and buy a Brother or a Canon or something?  If that's my only option please just tell me so I can do it an move on with my life.  I have pdf's I need to scan.
