Hi,

My HP ENVY 4527 will only print in colour if I email the printer. Yes, only if I email it.

If I print from desktop in Word / Photos / Photoshop etc it will only print in black and white. This is a new laptop with fresh HP Smart software installed from the Windows Store.

It appears the firmware needs to be updated of the drivers have a serious bug.

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

 

Check Printer Settings on the Laptop

Default Print Settings: Sometimes, default print settings may be set to black and white. Make sure the print settings are set to color by default.

Open the document or photo you want to print.

Go to File > Print and select your HP ENVY 4527 printer.

Click on Printer Properties or Preferences.

In the settings window, check if there’s an option for Color and ensure it's set to Color instead of Black & White or Grayscale.

 

Update Printer Drivers

Outdated or corrupt drivers could be causing issues. Ensure your printer drivers are up to date.

Go to the HP Support Website: HP ENVY 4527 Drivers.

Enter your printer model and download the latest drivers for your operating system (Windows 11).

Run the driver installation and follow the instructions.

 

Check the HP Smart App Settings

Since you mentioned you're using the HP Smart app, ensure that the settings in the app are configured correctly.

Open the HP Smart app.

Go to the Printer Settings and look for any color-related settings.

Double-check that the printer is set to print in color by default.

 

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Use Windows Print Dialog Settings

Sometimes the issue could be with how the Windows 11 print dialog interacts with the printer. When you print, before you hit “Print,” click on the Printer Properties or Preferences and make sure that the color settings are selected properly.

 

Try Printing via Another Program

Test printing from another application (like a web browser) to see if the issue is specific to a program (Word, Photoshop, etc.).

If printing in color works from a different program, the issue may be with the specific application or its settings.

 

Reinstall the Printer Software

If none of the above works, try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer software.

Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.

Select your HP ENVY 4527, click Remove.

Then, reinstall the printer using the latest drivers from HP’s website.

 

Test Direct Email Printing

Since email printing works in color, it’s possible the printer is receiving commands via email that are different from the ones sent from your desktop applications. This may indicate a deeper issue with how the printer communicates with the laptop.
