My printer has been having trouble updating. While it is idle, it will attempt to update its firmware automatically and will freeze. At this point, I have to hard reset the printer (unplugging cord, holding power button for 30 seconds, replugging into outlet). After doing so, the printer will either go into idle status or present the blue error screen with various errors (each time it is different). If I get an error screen, a hard reset will sometimes fix the error. I have also tried updating the firmware on my computer through the HP website, but the firmware updater will begin installing the update and then say "Device update cancelled. Device update was cancelled by user. Firmware was not updated."

You are welcome🙂 Resetting the printer to factory settings and then updating the printer firmware may resolve the issue, let's try these steps:

1.) From the printer control panel home screen, touch the Settings icon.

2.) Touch Tools

3.) Select Restore Factory Defaults and touch Yes.

4.) Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door

5.) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button). Wait for at least 15 seconds.

6.) Plug the power cord back into the printer

7.) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges.

8.) Try updating the printer firmware.

Let me know how it goes!

Thank you for being a part of HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
I got to know from your post that the printer firmware update keeps failing. Not to worry, I'll be glad to help you out. However, for an accurate solution, I would need more details:

What's the error code displayed on the blue screen?

Do you have a printer USB cable?

Let me know!

Thanks!

The blue error is usually different. The most recent error code was C4EBA23D. The one before was C4E3A341. This has been going on for about a month and a half now, so I'm not sure what the error codes were before those. I also do not have a printer USB cable.
