Just installed a new mesh router and was able to connect my printer after a few tries when I first setup the new router a few days ago. I turned the printer off and I needed to print something just now and now my printer won't connect to it. It connects when I remove the security password but not with it on. I've tried restoring network defaults and still not working. Not sure if this matter but it's a dual band router and there's no way to assign a different SSID to each band. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks @Kumar0307. I have over 40 other devices that connect to the new router just fine so I wouldn't say there's no issue at all with the printer. I was able to connect the printer to my network by connecting an extender I used with my previous router to the new router and connected the printer to that. The issue is definitely with the encryption method. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • This could be an issue with the Encryption/security on your router.
  • The Encryption should be WPA2, contact your ISP to verify if the router/modem has WPA2 enabled.
  • Verify if the router is able to forward the Bonjour packets with your Internet service provider.
  • Also, Check if there are any updates available for the router.
  • A dual-band router will have 2.4GHZ and 5GHz network. this printer can only connect to a 2.4GHz network. If both the networks have same name, the printer will have connectivity issues. The SSID can be changed/renamed by going to the EWS page of the router. Please contact your Internet service provider for more info.

Let us try these steps:

Step 1: Update printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Step 2: Reboot network devices

  1. Turn off the Router, Printer, and the computer/ mobile devices.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Turn on the Router first and wait for all the lights to stabilize.
  4. Turn on the printer and allow it to configure itself.
  5. Turn on the computer/ mobile devices.

Step 3: Restore network settings and run wireless setup wizard

  1. From the home screen of your printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/162/c02131772.gif .
  2. Touch the Setup icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/359/c04943257.gif .
  3. Touch Restore Network Defaults or Restore Network Settings, and then touch Yes to confirm your selection.
  4. After the default network settings are restored, touch the back arrow, touch Wireless Settings, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard.
  5. The printer searches for available networks.
  6. Touch the name of your wireless network.
  7. Type your network security password (WEP or WPA key), and then touch Done.

Let me know how this goes.

Thanks for the reply, @Kumar0307. I contacted the manufacturer of the routher and they told me that the security encryption is WPA2-MIX, which from my understand would allow WPA and WPA2 devices to connect. As I mentioned, the router only has one SSID for both the 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ but there's a feature on the router that disables the 5GHZ for 30 mins to allow devices to connect to only the 2.4GHZ but I have tried this and it did not work. But as I mentioned, if I remove the encryption, the printer is able to connect so it sounds like the issue is with the encryption. I have tried your steps previously but I will try it again and let you know. But if you have any other suggestions after I provided additional information, would really appreciate it. Thanks again.

  • If you have performed these steps already and the issue persists, try checking with your Internet service provider as there seem to be no issues with the printer. Also, considering that the printer was working fine with the previous router.
  • It could be an issue with the encryption method or the password.
  • Try connecting this printer to a different router if available and check if that works.

Keep me posted.
