Hello, my printer I have had for a while, i had to update with this as new when windows 10 came out.It has worked well until recently it lost its wi-fi connection. I managed to reconnect but it lost it again next day. I tried to uninstall to reinstall but it would not let me do this saying it could only be done by administrator which i am. I have lost the use of my desktop tool box which now only tells me to install a printer. I was going to do that. So I am unable to scan to computer. I have followed all the advice offered by to no avail. The complete device software package will not download, the message says failed as it can only be done by an administrator which I checked and I am administrator. I have lost the ability to scan to computer which is very important to me just now. The sites recommended to try do not work. Downloads do not work; trying to reinstall the printer does not work, my download disc does not work. I have seen older posts with the same problem and tried the recommended suggestions which also did not work for me. I can print, scan a copy but not scan to computer. I can't get the scanner and the computer to talk to each other using wifi. Help please.

Hello,
To address this incident, please follow the following procedure:
1. Uninstall printing software:
- Unplug the USB cable at the back of the printer, if necessary.
- On the keyboard, simultaneously tap the Windows flag and the R key. The Run window opens.
- Type appwiz.cpl, then OK. The Programs and Features window opens.
- Click the right mouse button on HP ENVY 5540 series Basic Software, then Uninstall and Yes.
Note: If the software uninstall process does not start or an error displays while uninstalling, download Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed from the Microsoft website, and then try uninstalling again.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the uninstall of the printer.
- Restart the computer.
2. Launch the registry editor:
- On the keyboard, simultaneously tap the Windows flag and the R key. The Run window opens.
- Type regedit, then OK. The registry editor opens.
- Develop HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, click with the right mouse button on Hewlett-Packard and Delete. (If the PC is HP-branded, develop Hewlett-Packard and remove Digital Imaging)
3. Delete the HP ENVY 5540 series folder in the way:
- C: \Program Files\HP
- C:\Program Files (x86)\HP
4. Rename folder 3 in 3_old in the path below (a restart may be required):
- C:\Windows\System32\spool-drivers\x64.
- C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\W32X86.
NOTE: If the file refuses this action do as follows:
On the keyboard, tap the Windows and X keys simultaneously.
- Click on Windows PowerShell (Admin), and then Yes.
- Type net stop spooler, then press Enter.
- Rename the file.
- Type net start spooler, then press Enter.
5. Launch a new installation of the printe with the HP ENVY 5540 series Full Software and Drivers.
6. Try to print and scan again.
Do not hesitate to contact us in case of need.

Hello Mans, thank you for your extensive reply, however I have tried this already. I tried again and can't get beyond trying to uninstall, despite being down as administrator of my laptop. I get this message
"Call to Driver Package Uninstall returned error 5 for package etc (numbers follow) A caller of driver package install must be a member of the administrators group to uninstall a driver package."
I think in trying several different ways I now have the wrong package on laptop, not the original, and can't remove it.

I now appear to have no printer installed in my computer!! I think it is time to get a new one after 3 years of good use of this one (despite 6x4 photo tray never having worked)!
Thank you for your time and help which sadly didn't work for me.

I have found I can get printer/scanner to work just using usb lead, so not through the internet. I am wondering how this affects my HP ink account. Will I have to cancel, as there is no internet connection with the printer now.
