I have 2 identical Lenovo notebooks, both connected wirelessly to my  HP Envy 5549 & both running Windows 11. When I select Settings/Bluetooth & devices/Printers & scanners/HPC4C212 (HP ENVY 5549 serices)/Printing preferences/Paper-Quality, I have 3 options: Tray Selection, Quality Settings, and Color. I am able to select Color or Black & White, and it produces printouts in colors I select in an app.

On the other notebook, I select Settings/Bluetooth & devices/Printers & scanners/HP Envy 5540 (Network)/Printing preferences/Paper-Quality, I have only 2 options: Tray Selection and Quality Settings, but no Color option. Additionally, this Printer Preferences box includes Printing Shortcut tab, and the notebook described in my first paragraph does not include this tab. Everything I print from this notebook is in black and white, regardless of my color selections in an app.

I suspect the problem lies in the bolded text in each above paragraph. They seem to be identified as 2 slightly different models. I used Basic download of HP 5549 All-In-One software and drivers at HP driver site and selected Windows to manage printer. I do not have HP Smart and absolutely do not want to use it. If HP Smart is the solution, I'll live with it. If there's a solution that doesn't require HP Smart, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

On a windows based machine do the following. On your computer go to control panel>devices and printers and then  right click on the icon for your printer and select printer properties from the drop down menu. Then click on the advanced tab and confirm that you have an HP driver installed and not a Microsoft IPP or class driver installed. If not an HP driver you need to delete and reinstall because Microsoft drivers do not always support all features. If it shows an HP driver, then click on the device settings tab and scroll down till you see device type and change it to color.

Unfortunately, your suggestion did not solve my problem. The driver is HP Envy 5540, so all good there. Under device management, there is only the name of my printer, followed by Installable Options, under which are 2 greyed out options (Automated Duplexing Unit-Not Installed and Photo Tray-Not Installed) and 1 active option called Automatic Configuration-Off. There's nowhere to scroll. Most of the window is white space.

Thank you, though, for reaching out.
