HP ENVY Pro 6432 All-in-One Printer

Hello,

For several months now, my HP Envy Pro 6400 series printer has been making noises every 10-15 minutes. It makes a scanning type noise that I assume is it cleaning the cartridge heads or something similar, then makes the three chime noise to say it's ready.

I don't want to have to unplug it all the time and then plug it in and give it time to warm up every time I want to print a single page. On a sensory level this noise now equates with drawing nails down a chalkboard and I am ready to throw the whole printer out the window. There is no display on the printer to tell me what is wrong, I checked for a Firmware update and there is none, and the HP Smart App doesn't mention any problems either.

I am using HP Instant Ink subscription, and my home wireless network is not dropping (so it is not that it is dropping and reconnecting every 10-15 minutes).

The sound now makes me nauseous. Please help me fix this issue.

Hi @Carriecorkirl ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Envy Pro 6400 series printer is making frequent cleaning noises, which is likely due to the printer automatically performing routine maintenance tasks, like cleaning the printhead, even when it is not being used. This is common with inkjet printers, especially when using services like HP Instant Ink, as they are designed to keep the printhead in good condition and prevent clogs. However, this constant cleaning can be annoying and disruptive, especially if you're not using the printer regularly.

Here are some steps to try and minimize or stop these cleaning cycles:

Check for Printer Settings:

  • Sometimes, printers have a setting related to "maintenance" or "cleaning." Unfortunately, some models don’t allow you to disable this completely, but it’s worth checking the printer’s settings through the HP Smart app or the printer’s web interface (if accessible via IP address). Look for any setting related to automatic cleaning or maintenance.

Disable Instant Ink (Temporarily):

  • Since you're using HP Instant Ink, it's possible that the printer is performing extra maintenance due to this service. If you're willing to test this, try temporarily disabling the Instant Ink subscription (or switch to regular ink cartridges) to see if the noise persists. This could help determine if the cleaning is linked to Instant Ink.

Power Saving Mode:

  • Ensure the printer is in power-saving mode if you aren't using it regularly. This may help reduce the frequency of maintenance tasks, as some printers only perform maintenance when they are left idle for a certain period.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Try a hard reset of the printer by turning it off, unplugging it for a minute, and then plugging it back in. This can sometimes resolve odd behaviors like unnecessary cleaning cycles.

External Noise Reduction:

  • As a last resort, consider moving the printer to a location where the noise is less disruptive (such as a separate room or an area further away from where you work). While not a fix, it may alleviate the sensory irritation.

I hope this helps.
