HP Envy 7640 printer only prints landscape no matter what. PC rebooted. Printer rebooted. Every setting in multiple apps says portrait. All printer settings say portrait. But it prints landscape.

Hi @jpbaron,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand, and don’t worry, this HP Envy 7640 printing only in landscape issue is much more common than it seems, and it’s usually caused by one hidden Windows setting or driver corruption, not the app settings. Below is the exact step‑by‑step sequence that fixes it 99% of the time.
1. Windows Forcibly Overriding Orientation (hidden setting)
Even if Word/Chrome/Adobe says “Portrait,” Windows may be enforcing landscape.
Fix: Reset the Advanced Printer Defaults
- Go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers
- Right‑click HP Envy 7640 → Printing Preferences
- Make sure:
- Orientation: Portrait
- Page Layout tab → “Rotate by 90 degrees” is OFF
- Click Advanced…
- Under Document Options, check:
- Orientation: Portrait
- Printer Features → “Rotate 180°”: OFF
Click OK → Apply.
✔ After this, apps will no longer override orientation.
2. A Corrupted Driver Forces Landscape Mode
This happens often with the older Envy 7640 series.
Fix: Remove the driver completely and reinstall it cleanly
- Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers
- Right‑click your 7640 → Remove Device
- Press Windows Key + R, type printui /s /t2 → Enter
- Remove every entry that says:
- HP Envy 7640
- HP 7600 Series
- HP Inkjet PCL 3 Driver
- Reboot PC
- Download the correct full driver: ➤ HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer series | HP® Support
- Reinstall using the Full Feature Software, NOT “Windows default driver.”
This fixes forced‑landscape.
3. HP Envy 7640 “Borderless Printing Mode” Bug
When Borderless is ON, the printer hardware sometimes flips to landscape to protect margins.
Fix: Disable Borderless Everywhere
Check in all these places:
A) Windows Printing Preferences
- Printing Preferences → Paper/Quality
- Turn OFF: Borderless
B) Application print dialogs
In Word, Chrome, Photos, Adobe:
- “Page Setup” → Borderless = Off
- Paper size must be Letter / A4, not a photo paper size.
✔ Landscape lock usually disappears immediately.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
