Thank you, Mans.

I have now completed your instructions #4 & 5.  I am still unable to print in colour from my PC or phone.

Do you have any advice?

Regards

@AndyDenis

As a solution, I suggest that you use a generic print driver, in order to eliminate any conflict related to the Windows 10 operating system.

Try the following solution:

  1. Download and then run:
  2. Start the installation and then check the option Connect the printer later.
  3. On the keyboard, simultaneously press the Windows logo and R. The Run window opens.
  4. Type control printers, then press Enter. The Devices and Printers window opens.
  5. Click Add a printer. The Add a Printer window opens.
  6. Click The desired printer is not displayed.
  7. Click Add a local printer.
  8. Click Use an existing port.
  9. Click the Use an existing port drop-down list and select LPT1: (Printer Port), then click Next.
  10. Under Manufacturer in the Install Printer Driver window, click HP.
  11. Under Printers, select HP Photosmart 5520 series, and then click Next.
  12. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
  13. In the Devices and Printers window, right-click the HP Photosmart 5520 series, and then click Delete Device or Remove Device.
  14. In the Devices and Printers window, right-click the HP ENVY 4520 series printer name, and then click Printer Properties.
  15. Click the Advanced tab, and from the driver drop-down list, select HP Photosmart 5520 series, and then click Apply.
  16. Click the General tab, and in the Printer name field, type HP ENVY 4520 series, and then click OK.
  17. Try to print.

Hello Mans

Thanks for all your help.  I was able to follow all of your instructions (in the email - slightly different from those printed on the web page), except #14, where I was unable to find any reference to HP OfficeJet 3830 , and so I right-clicked HP ENVY 4520 series, and followed subsequent instructions.  In #16 I typed "HP OfficeJet 3830 series", as that's what you said in the message, and not HP ENVY 4520 series, as you say on the web page. I don't know know how to go back and correct that.

I was able successfully to print in colour from and Excel file and from a PDF file.

I am now unable to get into the printer properties and printer preferences from the Windows printers and scanners screen or the printers and devices page.  I get various error messages, but mostly that the printer is not connected.  I wonder whether this is to do with saying OfficeJet 3830 instead of Envy 4520, or if it is caused by using a generic driver.

From my phone, I was able to print in colour from a PDF file, though the image was the wrong way round and too small, and i was not able to print at all from an Excel file.  I will have a look at these again tomorrow, and raise another question here if I am unable to deal with it.

Many thanks for your help

I am now able to print in colour from my PC, my laptop, and my phone - in addition to the old ipad.  So that's sort out the main problem successfully, and i'm grateful for the help doing that.  Some of the software seems confused as to whether the printer is an HP OfficeJet 3830, HP ENVY 4527, or an HP Photosmart 5520, and I am unable to access printer properties or printer preferences from my PC.  How do I correct that?

Thanks
