Hi @AB0452

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for the image — that helps a lot. Based on the image and your description, it looks like the HP LaserJet M1136 MFP is showing an “Error” status during setup, and the USB configuration step isn’t completing properly. This occurs when the driver doesn’t fully recognize the device.

Let’s walk through a clean installation process that should get things working:

1. Uninstall Existing HP Software

  • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  • Uninstall anything related to HP LaserJet M1136 or HP Smart.

2. Disconnect the Printer

  • Unplug the USB cable from your computer.
  • Power off the printer.

3. Clear Temporary Files

  • Press Windows + R, type temp, and delete all files.
  • Repeat with %temp% and prefetch.

4. Download the Correct Driver

5. Install the Driver

  • Run the downloaded installer before connecting the printer.
  • When prompted, plug in the USB cable and power on the printer.
  • Wait for the setup to detect and configure the device.

6. Print a Test Page

  • Once installed, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click the printer > Printer Properties > Print Test Page.

If the Error Persists

  • Try a different USB port or cable.
  • Disable antivirus temporarily during installation.
  • Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool (Windows)
In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
Let it run a scan—it will automatically fix common connection issues.
You can also access this tool on HP’s support page if needed.

This model sometimes requires a bit of persistence, but your troubleshooting skills are solid — I’m confident we’ll get it sorted.

Let me know how far you get, and I’ll guide you through the next step if needed.
