In another post in this community regarding the same topic, I have a Macbook (non M1) running Sequoia 15.2 and a LJ p1606 printer. I have installed CUPS on this computer. The printer has an IP address which I will be using and Protocol will be HP Jetdirect. Yes, I can use AirPrint as well.
Obviously, I am trying to find the best suited driver for this printer to work with 15.2. It is hard to find the driver that is compatible with the OS.
In the other post, two users had suggested to use different drivers ie. HP Printer essentials -S5 1484 and HP Printer Driver (no os check) which I can confirm the one of them did work for me.
In my situation, the HP Printer Driver (non OS check) did work for me using either HP Jetdirect or AirPrint.

Hi @pfisher
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're working through the process of getting your HP LaserJet P1606 printer set up on your MacBook running macOS 15.2 (Sequoia). I'm glad to hear that HP Printer Driver (no OS check) worked for you. I'll go ahead and summarize what’s been successful for you and offer some additional suggestions to ensure everything is working smoothly.
Steps Taken and What Worked:
- You’ve correctly installed CUPS on your MacBook, which is crucial for managing printers via the command line and ensuring proper communication with networked printers.
- You’ve set up your printer with its IP address and HP Jetdirect protocol, and you also have the option to use AirPrint, which is fantastic for ensuring seamless communication.
- The HP Printer Driver (no OS check) worked well for your printer setup, and it seems to be your ideal solution.
Additional Tips and Recommendations:
AirPrint Compatibility:
- Since AirPrint works well for basic printing without needing any additional drivers, it's a great option if you're only interested in printing and not advanced features like scanning or using special settings.
- AirPrint is generally plug-and-play, so once the printer is connected to the same network, your Mac should be able to recognize it and print with minimal configuration.
HP Printer Driver (no OS check):
- Since this driver worked for you, it’s a solid option. Sometimes macOS updates can cause compatibility issues with drivers, but using a non-OS check driver can bypass that problem by ensuring the driver works independently of the macOS version.
- You may want to ensure the driver is always up-to-date by checking for newer versions of the driver that HP might release in the future, especially if you're facing any issues with print quality or specific printer features.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
