I changed internet providers and have been having trouble connecting my printer to the new network. I followed the instructions to reset and reconnect the printer, and ensured my network is on 2.4GHz channel.
Everything goes smoothly until I get to the "retrieving IP address step" which takes a couple of minutes and then I get "cannot connect the printer to wifi" message. Any idea on what could be causing this

Hi @mousaka,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering an issue during the WiFi setup of your HP LaserJet MFP M140w printer, specifically at the "retrieving IP address" step. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.
Check the Router Settings:
- Ensure that the 2.4GHz WiFi band is enabled and not hidden. Some routers have separate settings for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, so double-check your router configuration.
- Make sure that the SSID (network name) is visible and not hidden.
- MAC Address Filtering: If your router has MAC address filtering enabled, you might need to add the printer’s MAC address to the allowed list. You can find the printer’s MAC address by printing a network configuration page from the printer’s control panel.
WiFi Signal Strength:
- Check if the printer is placed too far from the router. The printer may be having trouble connecting if the signal strength is too weak.
- Try moving the printer closer to the router during setup to ensure a strong signal.
IP Address Conflicts:
- Make sure there are no IP address conflicts in your network. If multiple devices are trying to use the same IP address, it can cause issues. You can manually assign an IP address to the printer via your router's settings or printer’s control panel if needed.
Network Configuration Reset:
- Perform a Network Reset on the printer again, and try setting up the WiFi connection from scratch. To reset the network settings, go to the printer's control panel:
- Home > Setup > Network Setup > Restore Network Defaults.
- Then, try connecting the printer again using the WiFi setup.
Firmware Update:
- Ensure that your router and printer firmware are up to date. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues.
Try WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup):
- If your router supports WPS, you can try connecting the printer via this method. On the printer, go to Wi-Fi Setup Wizard and select WPS if available. Press the WPS button on your router and the printer should connect automatically.
Check DHCP Settings:
- Ensure your router’s DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is enabled, so it can automatically assign an IP address to the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
