New HP LaserJet Pro 3201dw defaults to paper tray 1 on macOS 15 or iOS 18. There are no options via HP Smart app to have the printer default to paper tray 2. Also, there are no settings on the printer panel for defaulting to paper tray 2. Is there something that I've missed? It seems the only option for macOS 15, at least, is to create a custom preset in macOS 15 Printer & Scanners setting for the printer. However, you've to always remember to switch to the custom preset before printing on macOS 15. Otherwise, the printer in macOS 15 Printer Center reports out-of-paper error since it's defaulting to paper tray 1. Additionally, even if you switch to custom preset on macOS 15, the custom preset does not remain persistent. As soon as print job is done, the printer reverts back to paper tray 1. Are there any solutions?

I do not have one in front of me to see all the menu settings but things to consider:
If tray 2 paper size and type are not set to match the paper type the print job requires the printer will default to tray 1 and ask for paper. Leaving tray2 set as any size and any type can trigger this behavior. Regardless of the driver if the paper size and type the print job is formatted for and is selected when sending the job matches the loaded and configured paper in the printer, the job should print automatically. In some respects you could consider the printer dumb as it only does what it is told.

I’ve already tried this once, and this doesn’t work either. If I set tray 1 to legal and tray 2 to letter, and then try printing a letter formatted document, unless I switch to custom setting in macOS printer preferences, the printer still defaults to tray 1.

Additionally, try changing the settings and save the settings as a Preset from the drop-down menu, then complete the print job and the settings should remain as default till any other preset will be used
