HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw
macOS 12.0 Monterey

My 3301 persists in selecting Tray 1, a manual feed tray, and displays "out of paper" from the printer queue.  Neither the Web Interface, HP App, or the front panel of the printer allows you to select a default tray.  How can this be bypassed or overridden?  See images

Hi @kcarver,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw is stuck on Tray 1 as the default paper tray and is showing "out of paper," you can try a few steps to resolve this issue:

1. Check Paper Tray Settings in Web Interface:

  • Open a web browser and enter the IP address of the printer to access the Web Interface.
  • Navigate to the “Tray Settings” or “Paper Management” section.
  • Check if you can configure the default tray settings here. If Tray 1 is set as the default, change it to the desired tray.

2. Update or Reinstall Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check for any available firmware updates on HP’s website for your printer model.
  • If an update is available, follow the instructions to download and install it. Firmware updates can sometimes resolve issues with tray management.

3. Check Printer Settings on macOS:

  • Open System Preferences on your Mac.
  • Go to Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your HP printer from the list and click Options & Supplies.
  • Look for any paper tray settings or configuration options that may allow you to set the default tray.

4. Reset Printer to Factory Defaults:

  • If other methods fail, you might consider performing a factory reset on the printer. This can often resolve issues with incorrect settings.
  • Consult the printer's user manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

5. HP Smart App:

  • Make sure you have the latest version of the HP Smart app.
  • Open the app, select your printer, and look for any settings related to paper trays. Sometimes, reinstalling or updating the app can resolve configuration issues.

6. Manual Paper Tray Selection:

  • On the printer's front panel, try manually selecting the paper tray for the current print job. This option might be under “Paper Tray” or “Paper Handling” settings.
  • Ensure that the tray you want to use is properly loaded with paper and correctly installed in the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
