HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP MFP-3301 fdw and it goes to sleep. it actually turns off. The only way to get it to print is to go to the printer across the room and turn it back on. I have to do this every time I want to print. I hate this stupid printer. Is there any way to fix this. I dont care if I have to hack it.   I am using USB direct connection.

Hi @Trae333,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw is going into deep sleep or auto power-off mode, which is causing the frustration. Here's how to address this issue and ensure your printer stays ready for printing.

Adjust Power Management Settings

Access Printer Settings:

  • If the printer has a control panel screen, navigate to the Setup menu (gear icon).
  • Look for Power Management or Energy Settings.

Modify Sleep Mode:

  • Set the sleep timer to a longer duration or disable sleep mode altogether, if possible.

Disable Auto Power-Off:

  • Look for an Auto Power-Off setting and turn it off.

Save Settings: Make sure to confirm or save any changes.

Use the HP Smart App

  1. Download the App:
    • Install the HP Smart App on your computer or smartphone.
  2. Connect to the Printer:
    • Add your printer using USB or Wi-Fi.
  3. Check for Settings:
    • Open the app and look for Advanced Settings or Printer Settings to adjust power options.

Update Firmware

  1. Check for Updates:
    • Download the latest firmware for your printer from the HP Support website.
  2. Install Firmware:
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to update your printer’s firmware.

USB Wake Settings

  1. On Your Computer:
    • Open Device Manager (on Windows).
    • Locate the USB controller your printer is connected to.
    • Right-click and choose Properties, then navigate to the Power Management tab.
    • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Check Connection Stability

Ensure that the USB cable is:

  • High-quality and supports the required data speed.
  • Plugged directly into the computer (avoid USB hubs).

Factory Reset the Printer

  1. Restore Defaults:
    • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Service > Restore Defaults.
  2. Reconfigure Settings:
    • Set up the printer again and disable power-saving features.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I have the same issue.  The problem with the HP provided solution in this thread is none of those settings are available in the menu system.  You cannot modify the sleep parameter past 60 minutes.  You cannot disable auto power off as the menu setting does not exist.  Additionally, in trying to look for these parameters, you cannot do so on the printer itself because power settings are locked and it asks for username and password.  Username and password is NOT addressed in ANY HP documentation that I can find.  I am making the above statement based on using the HP smart app where either allows you in by entering the printer pin which can be found when opening the front door.  It is there where no parameters exist as stated and the only parameter, again, is to extend energy saver to 60 minutes max.

This is a significant issue.  The documentation is poor and this printer keeps going off line.  The only way to print is to actually go to the printer and hit the power button and wait for it to cycle up which also takes an excessive amount of time.

When searching for this solution, the prior print Rin this line was plagued with the same issue.  HP support said, for that printer, to set a static IP address for the printer.  While Ic annotated see that as a viable solution, people said it worked.  Perhaps the unit sleeps and the network stays up so the printer is available on the network and it can be printed to.

HP support:  please advise as to how to make this printer functional past 60 minutes on the network.  I will be forced to return it without a solution.

thx

ok here is the work around fix.  Plug in ANY USB drive into the slot.  The printer will not go to sleep and you won't have any issues.......
