Hi, I've been trying to install a HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 remote Windows Server 2016. Are there any drivers I can use for it? the HP Easy Start App, (after finnally I was able tu run it because it asked for .net Frameworks) says the OS is uncompatible. Though I see several other drivers in the driver download page but can't tell with could work.
The thing is that I need a driver that does not need the printer to be connected as it is a remote server (cloud server). We usually install the printer driver in the cloud server and in the local client machines and when connecting through the 'Remote Desktop App' the rnter redirects ir self into the server and this is how we are able to print from apps hosted in the cloud server.
The printer is alredy installed locally and beeing shared by 3 different local computers through WiFi connection but we need to be able to use it through apps (programs) installed in the Windows Server 2019 cloud server. Thnks in advance!

Hi @aroblesgz
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To set up your HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 on Windows Server 2016 for remote desktop printing, you will need to use the right printer drivers and configure the printer for network or shared printing. Since HP Easy Start is incompatible with Windows Server 2016, and you're trying to print from a cloud server, you'll need to follow a few steps to get the printer working properly.
Steps to Install and Use the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 on Windows Server 2016 (Remote Desktop Environment):
Download the Correct Driver for Windows Server 2016:
- First, you’ll want to download the correct full feature printer driver for your printer from HP’s official website.
- HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 drivers for Windows Server 2016 can typically be found by navigating to the HP support page and selecting your printer model (HP OfficeJet Pro 9730) and the correct operating system version (choose Windows Server 2016 if it's listed, or Windows 10 64-bit, which can also work).
- If Windows Server 2016 is not listed, you may use the Windows 10 driver, as many printer drivers are cross-compatible.
Install the Printer Driver on the Remote Server:
- You’ll need to manually download and install the printer driver on the Windows Server 2016.
- After downloading the driver, double-click the installer to run it. If the installer doesn’t recognize Windows Server 2016, try running it in compatibility mode (right-click the installer → Properties → Compatibility tab → select Windows 8 or 10).
- Once installed, the printer should be recognized as a network printer, assuming it's connected via Wi-Fi and shared across your local network.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel, thanks for your help, I'll try that 'compatibility' option you mentioned... the thing is that all drivers I have tried open the 'Easy Start App' wich seems to be the one not compatible with the WS 2016. I'll try with the 'compatibility mode' you mention.
There's , though, a 'universal' hp driver that I have not tried either... let's see which one goed through...

Hi Rachel, Finally I was able to install the Universal Smart Printer driver to the WS2016, the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 is being redirected in the coud server but when sending something to print from the cloud server the prinetr shows in it's panel the instruction to print but suddenly stops without printing nothing. Sometime the document stays in the 'printing list' in the local computer and sometime no.
Like as if the printing instruction is canceled or doesn't goes through... What can it be?
Thanks,
Alejandro Robles

HI @aroblesgz,
Thank you for your response.
It sounds like you're encountering an issue where print jobs sent to the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 from your Windows Server 2016 are either not printing or are being canceled. This could be caused by several potential issues related to the printer, the server setup, or the communication between the cloud server and the printer.
Here’s a step-by-step approach to troubleshoot the problem:
1. Check Printer Connection and Cloud Redirection
- Since the printer is redirected from the cloud server, ensure that the printer is correctly connected and accessible over the network. Sometimes, a network instability or cloud redirection issue can cause the print job to fail.
- Check if the printer is online and has a steady connection to the cloud server. You can do this by checking the printer's network status on its display panel or through its web interface (accessed via its IP address).
2. Verify Printer Driver Installation
- Ensure that the Universal Print Driver or the specific driver for the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 is installed correctly on the Windows Server 2016.Reinstall the driver to rule out any driver-related issues. HP’s Universal Print Driver is often a good option for compatibility across different environments, but sometimes, specific drivers work better for particular models.
- For the Universal Print Driver: Make sure you have the correct version (32-bit vs 64-bit) for your system.
- If possible, install the full-feature HP driver for the OfficeJet Pro 9730 instead of the Universal driver, as it may provide better support for certain features like scanning, and it might be more stable with your particular model.
3. Check Print Spooler on Server
- A common issue with print jobs not being processed is a problem with the Print Spooler service on the server.
- Restart the Print Spooler service: Go to Services on your Windows Server 2016, find Print Spooler, and restart it. You can also set the service to automatic if it's not already.
- After restarting the Print Spooler, check if any jobs in the print queue get processed or if the issue persists.
4. Examine the Print Queue on the Local Computer and Server
- Check the print queue on both the local computer and the server to see if jobs are getting stuck.
- If jobs are stuck in the print queue, try clearing the queue and resending the print job.
- Look for any error messages or status codes that might give a clue (e.g., Error printing, Job canceled, etc.).
- Clear the print queue: Sometimes print jobs get "stuck" due to a corrupt job. Clear all jobs from the queue, restart the print spooler, and then try printing again.
5. Test Printing Locally on the Printer
- Test printing directly from the printer: This can help confirm if the issue is with the cloud server or the printer itself. Try printing a test page from the printer’s control panel or via the printer’s web interface.
- Check printer status: Ensure the printer is not showing any errors like a paper jam, low ink, or other warnings that could prevent it from printing.
6. Look for Communication Errors
- Check for network-related issues: Since the printer is cloud-connected, it could be experiencing network instability or communication issues.
- Check router or firewall settings to ensure that there are no blocks or restrictions on the printer’s communication with the cloud server.
- Ping the printer from the server to ensure it is reachable on the network.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel, thanks for you support and followup...
Yesterday I retried configuring the printer though without success.
- I reinstalled the Universal HP Prin Driver, I'm using the 64 bits which seems to be the correct one. Can tell which driver full-feature HP driver, I'm seeing now the one named: HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 Series EasyStart Printer Setup Software - Offline Use Only I'll try this one (offline use only) because the Easy Start App that opens a .Net web interface says it's imcompatible with the OS (Win Server 2016)
- Te connection between the server and the local computer + Printer seems to be ok. The server shows the redirected printer ok. I even connected the printer via USB cable (it's originally connected and configure as Wi-Fi according to setup instructions). This way, both computers (local and cloud server) show two different HP OJ 9730 computers connected. The server show both redirected printers as well.
- Locally there's no problem printing correctly. We can print from Software application as a test printing page (in 'both' printers).
- What I found is the 'event log' in the printer's web panel. There they are all printing tests marked as ERROR, there's an event code but I guess it's not an error code. In the printer's panel, there's also and evento log, the messages says: Erroneous or incompatible file format. I took some photos but I can't attached them here.
- In the printing queue list, I continually checked it out. Some test get stucked there (locally and remote server) but when I was able to get the printers 'connected' the queue (both sides) do NOT stuck any printing job. They look clean, no files there waiting or in error.
So, I'll try installling this other (offline) driver mentioned above, try restarting the printing spool service as you mentioned and keep you posted as how came out.
Thank you very much.

Alejandro Robles

Hi Alden4,
Tkanks for your help, we haven't been able to make the printer pint through the cloud server yet. We have reinstalled the 'Universal' ckecking for compatibility issues but it always ends in the same issue. The server reads and redirects ok the printer, we're able to send to print from the cloud server's installed applications (softwares), the printer shows it receives the instruction but aborts the printing job. It marks 'incompatible file format'... no matter if we send a print test, a word document a txt document, pdf, etc... it always ends this same way.
What we (A cloud server technician has been helping me) understand is that the UNIVERSAL driver, even though it seems that installs correctly the printer, is uncompatible with it. We haven´t been able to install another driver provided in the HP support portal because it opens a .Net app to install the driver that marks OS incompatibility and calls Us to check in the HP support portal for the right driver. We haven't been able to install the 'specific' driver through the 'MS Store', the EasyStart App (online and offline options) or any other but only the UNIVERSAL HP Printer driver option.
If you can point me or tell me which would be the correct SPECIFIC (not universal) driver for Windows Server 2016 would be of great help. We need a one that does not runs through the EasyStart App though.
