Hi @aroblesgz,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e printer likely requires specific drivers to work correctly with Windows Server 2016, but HP's EasyStart-based installer isn't compatible with many server environments. Here’s how to address the issue.
Steps to Install a Compatible Driver for Windows Server 2016:
Access the HP Enterprise Driver Library:
- Visit the HP Support and Drivers page and search for the OfficeJet Pro 9730e.
- If the page suggests EasyStart or Universal drivers, look instead for an HP Basic Driver or PCL6 Driver that supports your server OS.
Download a Standalone Driver:
- If no standalone driver is listed, download the Universal Print Driver (UPD) but ensure it's configured for PCL6 rather than PostScript or PCL5.
Manually Install the Driver:
- Use Add Printer Wizard instead of relying on EasyStart:
- Extract the driver files (usually a .zip or .exe archive).
- Open Devices and Printers on the server.
- Click Add a Printer > The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Choose Add a local printer or Add a network printer with manual settings.
- Point to the extracted driver files during installation.
Ensure Compatibility Mode:
- If the specific driver isn't available for Windows Server 2016, try installing the driver in Compatibility Mode:
- Right-click the driver .exe file and select Properties.
- Go to the Compatibility tab, check Run this program in compatibility mode for, and choose Windows 10.
Verify Printer Settings:
- Ensure the printer is configured to use the correct protocol (e.g., RAW or LPR under Port Settings).
- Check the Job Processing Mode in the printer's web interface or settings to confirm that it can handle formats like PDF, Word, or other documents being sent.
Alternate Solutions:
Generic PCL Driver: Some HP printers can work with a Generic PCL6 Driver. These can be downloaded from Microsoft's Update Catalog or included in Windows Server 2016.
Custom Queue Setup: If the issue persists, create a custom queue with a simplified print path:
- Configure the printer for direct IP printing.
- Disable advanced features like "Bidirectional Support" temporarily to eliminate compatibility issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,
Thanks for your help and followup.... last friday we retry to insyal the printer according to your suggestions. We haven't been able to install any HP driver, basic or whats so ever... the only driver (from HP's website) that we have been able to install is the HP Universal Print Driver and we have confirmed that it installed as a PCL6 format, it shows it in the printer properties dialog.
We reinstall the driver like you mention by trying to 'add a network printer manually' and the result is te same. The server sees the redirected printers, we are able to send a printing test, the printer recognise the instruction but aborts the printing jog because of a file format error.
We're very confuse because the WS2016 says everything is correctly installed but we're guessing that the Universal Printer Driver does notworks here. The only thing we have to try now is to find the MS PCL6 generic printer driver you mention.
Any other comment you can give Us or pointing Us directly to a HP OJ Pro 9730 Basic Driver will be of great help..

Alejandro Robles
