My HP OfficeJet Pro 9025 is trying to download a firmware update, but is unable to do so. Error message states "The printer update could not be downloaded. Touch Retry to start the download again, OK to exit". Retry doesn't work, cold restart didn't help, OK to exit prompts a restart, then it attempts to download again after a few minutes. Very annoying. Printer connected to the network via Wi-Fi. Any thoughts on how to resolve?

Did you recently remove and replace an ink cartridge? My black cartridge is running low and my printer has been complaining so I removed it and shook it. It sounds like it has plenty of ink so I placed it back into the printer. Since then, my printer has been attempting to download a supposed "update".
This appears to be a clever way for HP to block non-HP cartridges from being used once you have become an Instant Ink subscriber. The funny thing is, a) I'm no longer a subscriber and haven't been for over 2 years, and b) my cartridge is an original HP product.
I'm seeing two things happening here:
1) My printer is complaining about my ink being low wayyy before it's empty
2) When I realize it's not empty and try to reinstall it, my printer bans the cartridge and forces me to use a new one
Hmmm ...$$$$

Hi - I did recently replace the black cartridge. Haven't used anything but HP cartridges since we purchased the printer. Ruined the last printer that way so not taking any chances with this one. Never have been a subscriber for ink. We buy new HP cartridges as needed. Thought it might have something to do with the new black cartridge so took all of them out, shook, and replaced. The printer went in to the download attempt, but instead of staying on 00%, it cycled thru to 100%, but then showed the error screen indicating the update couldn't be downloaded. Very odd and very frustrating. I even tried connecting via hard wire to the LAN instead of via Wi-Fi, and that didn't work. Getting very tired of this thing trying to download an update every 15 minutes. Would greatly appreciate a response from an HP tech.

The same thing happened to me. Mine went through to 00% on every attempt until I replaced my cartridge. Then, it actually went to 100%, but it still failed the download. I can't use my printer at all and there seems to be no way to get support from HP. So sad. Incidentally, since you have never subscribed to Instant Ink, you may be able to disable your updates. This video shows a different model but the procedure is the same. Hopefully, you won't have the limitation that I have.

I found a solution that worked for me! Follow this person's instructions, except when the screen goes black, allow at least 30 seconds to pass before turning the printer back on.

This is a new issue judging by the dates. Started today. Printer keeps on trying to update. Then fails. I do subscribe to the cartridge program. I have real connectivity issues with my computer connecting to the 'Scanner". Hard restart usually resolves. But this can happen multiple times a day, then disappears for a month. I would like to get the update if possible. This is the first time I have seen it trying to update.

UPDATE to the update problem: even though I was able to get my settings unlocked, the update still fails. The good thing is that I am able to turn off the auto-update feature so now it doesn't check anymore. Whatever is in this update is causing an issue, so I'd advise turning off updates until this whole thing passes over.

I have the same issue. Message on printer says needing firmware update. It shows 100% download but then reports software failed to download RETRY or OK. I connected to printer via Embedded Web Server "Printer Updates" CHECK NOW. I clicked that button another window opened showing Downloading updates but shows 0% completed. I checked Firmware version and it shows a build date of 2023-03-29 so I'm not sure if I need an update or what is the current build for my 9025 printer. I've gone to HP.com asking for latest Firmware version and it does not provide the latest version ID nor build date so no sure about installing something that I may not need. I can cancel the update on printer and then close Embedded Web Server and printer still works. Very confusing. I'm running on MacBook Pro OS ver. 12.6.8
