Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I am having an issue with my HP laptop with Windows 10. I have installed/reinstalled the software for the HP officejet 3830 printer 2-3 times, but it still won't show up as an option for a default printer. Secondly, it won't connect over the wireless network. Thirdly, it won't scan. I am not very tech savvy and have used the HP doctor a many times with the same results. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

@James152,

  • The Wireless light on the printer, is that solid or flashing?
  • Do you get an alert or error when connecting to the WiFI network?
  • The Wifi Router that you have is that a dual-band Router(Router that has both 2.4GHz and 5Ghz networks)?
    • If yes, do they have the same name for both the networks?

The Printer model, HP Officejet 3830 is compatible only with the 2.4Ghz network and is not compatible with the 5Ghz network. Check the specifications from this link

If you have a Dual-band Router that has the same name for both the 2.4Ghz and the 5Ghz networks, then the printer may not connect to the Router.

Differentiate the 2 networks by providing them separate names and connect the printer to the 2.4GHz network only.

Let's try these steps:

First, let's check if the printer is still connected to the network.

  • Check the wireless light on the printer.
  • If the light is flashing, it means the printer is no longer connected to the network. We have to connect the printer to the WiFi.
    • To connect the printer to the network, follow the steps below
      • On the printer control panel, slide the screen from right to left to go to the Set-up menu
      • Go to Wireless Set-Up > Wireless set-up wizard
      • Follow the on-screen instruction and complete the network set-up
      • The Wireless light would become solid if successfully connected

Now, let's add the printer to the PC. (We shall also remove the old drivers if available)

  • In Windows, search for 'Control Panel' and open 'Programs' or 'Programs and features' and select 'Uninstall a Program'.
  • Select your HP Printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for 'Control Panel' and look for 'View devices and printers'option under 'Hardware and Sound'.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'.
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  • Click on the "Drivers" tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select Ok.
  • Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
  • Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Download the full feature printer software and install it from this link or manually search for drivers from https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/printers.
  • Open the downloaded file, follow onscreen instructions and complete installation
  • Try printing and scanning

You can also use the HP Smart App for using the printing and scanning features of the printer.
